It was the final weekend on the road for the Northeastern volleyball team, and they were unable to pull out a win against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponents William ‘ Mary and Virginia Commonwealth University. The two losses bring the Huskies’ record to 10-14 overall and 7-8 in the CAA.
Despite 16 kills from junior Whitney Turner and 14 from junior Ashley Reeves, the Huskies fell in five games to VCU (30-27, 24-30, 30-18, 25-30, 15-11). Northeastern led 8-7 in the final game before the Rams ran seven of the next eight points to take the final lead of the match. Senior Larissa Adomat had six blocks and junior Chelsea Carroll had 23 assists.
“We played really well against VCU, but then in the fifth game we just didn’t show up. It was all about executing [the] game plan, and it wasn’t happening on the court,” sophomore Kira Batura said.
The team needed a win against William ‘ Mary to stay in the running for the final CAA playoff spot, but were swept by the Tribe 30-22, 30-23, 30-24. Turner again led the team in kills with 14, Adomat and Reeves adding six each.
The losses dropped the Huskies to seventh place in the CAA rankings.
“We are now playing to win every point. We can’t worry about the next game or the next match. We just have to win every possible point to have a chance of staying in this,” Batura said. “If we win the three games we have left there is still a chance we make it to the playoffs, but everything is very up in the air.”
The Huskies return home to face Delaware Friday at 5 p.m. and Towson Saturday at 5 p.m. at Solomon Court.
