The Husky defense let Hofstra have its way during the first quarter of Saturday’s game, letting the Pride accumulate 17 points in the first 15 minutes alone.
But led by junior defensive end Matt Campopiano, the Pride were held scoreless in the middle two quarters of the contest.
Campopiano, with three sacks and six tackles (four solo) on the afternoon, is The Northeastern News Player of the Week.
A veteran on a defense that lost much of its firepower from last season, including All-American linebacker Liam Ezekiel, Campopiano has been a reliable presence on the defensive line for the Huskies. His five sacks during the season lead the team.
Campopiano, a Walpole native, has had his share of big games for NU this year, including a nine-tackle effort at Youngstown State and a two-sack game versus Maine.
In 2004, he started all 11 games at defensive end, and collected 52 tackles (22 solo), second among NU defensive linemen. He was first in tackles for a loss (11.5), sacks (5.5) and forced fumbles (3).
