Women’s basketball goes down at Hofstra, 78-61, falls back below .500 in CAA
January 30, 2019
Northeastern fell once again on the road, losing to the previously-winless-in-CAA Hofstra Pride in Hampstead, New York Sunday afternoon, 78-61.
The David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex saw a scrappy first quarter, with Hofstra (7-12, 1-6 CAA) able to hold Northeastern’s (13-5, 3-4 CAA) tempo and create an 18-12 lead at the end of the period.
NU senior forward Gabby Giacone got on the board early, securing six first-quarter points to lead the Huskies heading into the first break.
For the Pride, star senior guard Boogie Brozoski led the way in the first half, going 4-7 from the field with three triples.
The Huskies were not themselves in the first two quarters, allowing Hofstra to finish the half with five of their last six shots finding the net. This gave the Pride a 12-point buffer at halftime, leading 39-27.
At the end of the first half Northeastern was shooting rather well from the field at 12-30, but Hofstra couldn’t seem to miss, shooting at a ridiculously high 60 percent. This included four 3s, and 5-8 at the free-throw line.
Brozoski only increased her tempo throughout the game, adding another 20 points to her total in the second half. Junior guard Ana Hernandez Gil contributed 11 points in the second half, knocking down three 3s in the process.
NU sophomore guard Stella Clark, who has been in terrific form in the last month, led the Huskies in scoring with a season-high 14 points. She led the comeback effort in the second-half but the Huskies were unable to halt the Pride’s deadeye shooting from the field.
Hofstra went on to claim their first victory of the season in CAA play, ending their six-game losing streak.
Brozoski took player-of-the-game honors, finishing with 34 points, six rebounds and three assists, hitting 11-of-15 from the free-throw line.
For the Huskies, senior guard Jess Genco notched three assists, giving her the most all-time assists (466) for Northeastern in its women’s basketball program history.
“We didn’t start playing until the fourth quarter,” head coach Kelly Cole said after the game. “We’ve gotta have the mentality that we’re going after somebody, we’re sitting back too much.”
The Huskies head to North Carolina to try to end their downward trend on the road in recent weeks when they take on the College of Charleston on Friday.
