Northeastern reveals plans for second, bigger ISEC
May 8, 2019
Northeastern intends to build a second Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex, or ISEC II, on the Columbus Lot parking area, according to a letter sent to the Boston Planning and Development Agency from Kathy Spiegelman, vice president and chief of campus planning and development at Northeastern.
The new building will be located west of the first ISEC at 795 Columbus Ave. between the Renaissance Park Garage and the Columbus Garage.
“The development of the Columbus Lot provides an opportunity to strengthen Columbus Avenue as a main campus corridor and continues the established momentum of expanding the Northeastern campus south across the MBTA tracks,” Spiegelman wrote in the letter.
ISEC II will be approximately 350,000 gross square feet, including labs, classrooms, a “makerspace hub” and a “high bay research space.” It will be approximately 100,000 square feet larger than the first ISEC, which is 234,000 gross square feet.
The letter states that community leaders and the Northeastern Community Task Force have previewed the project and Northeastern will file a Project Notification Form mid-May.
