The newest addition to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority family, the Silver Line, first began operation on July 20 of this year. The MBTA boasts it is a “one-seat ride from Dudley Square to Logan Airport” with “quick and easy transfers to the Orange, Green and Red Lines and connections to commuter rail and Amtrak at South Station.”
Funding and construction issues affected the project and the buses were implemented later than planned.
A May 30 editorial by Doug Hanchett found in The Boston Globe said, “The T formally notified the Department of Environmental Protection last week that the Silver Line would be launched by Aug. 15 at the latest. But the T ran into construction problems along the two-mile route and had to send back shoddy station equipment, such as benches and shelters, for repair.”
The July 20 debut at Dudley Square was where the Silver Line’s buses using compressed natural gas first rolled out. The buses run in an unubstructed underground tunnel, strictly reserved for the convenience of time for passengers.
According to the MBTA, a Silver Line bus is in service every two minutes from 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
