Former Husky hits first major league home run
Luke Carlin, a catcher for the Huskies from 2000-02, hit his first major league home run for the San Diego Padres August 10. He connected for the three-run homer off Colorado Rockies pitcher Matt Herges at Coors Field in Denver. Carlin has 13 hits, five of which have been for extra bases, and six RBI this season in 85 at bats for the Padres.

Two men’s crew alumni advance at Olympics
Dan Walsh and Marshall Godschalk, both former members of the NU men’s crew teams, advanced with their respective countries yesterday in Beijing. Walsh and his United States heavyweight eight boat teammates beat Australia, Germany and the Netherlands. They will be rowing in the A-final Sunday morning. Godschalk and the Netherlands’ lightweight four boat finished as the runner-up to Ireland to advance to the semifinals of the event, which will be held tomorrow morning. Zara Northover, formerly of the women’s track team, will represent Jamaica in the shot put Saturday.

Swimmers receive CAA academic accolades
Early last month 14 members of the women’s swimming and diving team were honored with the Colonial Athletic Association Commisioner’s Academic Award for maintaining a 3.2 grade point average or higher for the 2007-08 season. Those awarded included seniors Brittany Gilles and Brooks Wallace; juniors Alexandra Doty, Courtney Flanagan, Kristen Ohlsen, Tara Thompson and Heather Whiting; sophomores Jackie Dalessandro and Kathrine Fugge and freshmen Emily Hanson, Shira Lewis, Carolyn Marsh, Sarah Martin and Jennyfer Roberts.
