Ever wonder what it would be like if your best friend, a woman, suddenly turned into a man?
Well, that’s what happens to April played by Anna Faris when her best friend Jessica played by Rachel McAdams wakes up to discover herself transformed. She changes from the epitome of teen perfection into a middle-aged con man named Clive who’s played by Rob Schneider.
Rob Schneider makes his debut as a woman in “The Hot Chick.” Schneider, notorious for his Saturday Night Live sketches and his leading roles in “Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo” and “The Animal,” reaches deep down inside himself to become Jessica.
Jessica is a girl who has everything any teenage girl could want and she is the envy of teenage girls. But all of this can not keep Jessica from being conniving and conceited.
In the scene when Jessica is introduced, she sets up Hindenburg, a heavy-set girl, by having her dress up in the opposing team’s cheerleading uniform at a pep rally — the student body then retaliates by hurling items at her. Jessica then goes to the mall, where she sees a pair of earrings that she must have, but is not willing to pay for. The earrings turn out to be ancient earring which can turn people into someone else.
Jessica’s life is turned upside down when she wakes up to discover her perfect body has been invaded by Rob Schneider’s.
April, also seen in “Scary Movie,” plays Jessica’s best friend, although kind of a ditz, she is a good friend. She is faced with a dilemma when her best friend is turned into a man. Faris can definitely relate to some of the not so popular characters in the movie
“It was like living an in alternate universe,” said Faris of playing April. “I certainly wasn’t tormented like other people, but I know people made fun of me. Having a happy high school experience was great.”
Although this movie is a comedy, there is definitely a deeper meaning to the “Hot Chick” — it explores insecurities that teenage women are faced with such as everyday issues like whether or not to have sex and the need for a man to fill that void deep down inside.
Schneider rates this movie as one of his best. The idea for movie came about from an experience that Tom Brady, the director of the movie, and Schneider shared.
“I used to make fun of an ex-girlfriend, and that is when ‘The Hot Chick’ was born. It took us six months to write the script,” said Schneider.
Making “The Hot Chick” gave Schneider a look into another world, the world in which women live everyday.
“I have a new found respect for women,” says Schneider, “They make themselves emotionally available.”
One element in this movie that made his part easy for Schneider to play, was his relationship with his wife.
“While we were filming the movie, I was falling in love with my wife, it was like I was talking to her.”
On the surface, the film seems to have a superficial theme to it, however by digging beneath the top layer the audience can see that there are many underlying themes to “The Hot Chick,” one being that Jessica’s parents are very accepting of the fact that their six year old son Booger is a cross-dresser who searches through his older sisters draws for bras and gets lost in his mothers closet.
In one of the closing scenes, Booger is dressed in red pumps and a necklace and is father simply states: “Son, if you can’t walk in heels you shouldn’t wear them.”
While it is normal behavior for a little girl to play in her mother and sister’s things, this is certainly something that is not expected from a young boy, yet Booger’s family is able to see past this.
“The Hot Chick” is definitely the movie to see if students are looking for something entertaining to watch. It is packed with physical comedy, and where else would you get to see Rob Schneider prancing around in daisy dukes?
Adam Sandler makes a guest appearance as a marijuana smoking Rastafarian in his funniest role yet.
“The Hot Chick” won’t be the best thing to see this year, but it’s definitely worth seeing.
