A fire alarm was triggered at the Marino Recreation Center just after 11:30 a.m. Oct. 17, prompting the evacuation of the recreation center, the adjacent Wollaston’s Market, B.GOOD, Tatte Bakery & Cafe and the Marino Mail Center.
A university spokesperson told The News in an email that the alarm was triggered by a steam leak in a stairwell of Marino.
“There was no fire, no smoke, no damage, and it posed no danger to anyone,” the spokesperson wrote. “The pipe has since been repaired and the system reset.”
A Northeastern University Police Department officer at the scene confirmed to The News the alarm was set off by a malfunctioning suppression pipe in Marino.
“I was on the treadmill and the fire alarm started going off and then no one moved, and then they told us to leave,” said Emilia Smith, a fourth-year behavioral neuroscience and business administration double major. “They made us wait outside, and they told us to go home, but all of our keys are in there, so we can’t leave.”
Smith said she and dozens of other evacuees stood outside for about 15 minutes while the Boston Fire Department investigated the cause of the alarm before being let back into the building.
