Whether itching for a new way to use spicy chipotle, or if that age old combination of Easy Mac and a MicroFridge is getting tired, members of the Northeastern community who love food now have a place to share their passion.
NUeats is a new student-run club focused around many college students’ favorite thing: food. Ken McGrady, a middler computer science and mathematics major and Thao Nguyen, a middler graphic design major, the founders of NUeats, said the club will focus on a general expansion of student’s knowledge of food through various activities.
“There is so much you can do with it,” McGrady said.
NUeats is in the final stages of the club recognition process and is recruiting members, said McGrady.
One night in mid-August, McGrady and Nguyen decided to pursue starting the cuisine-centered club while enjoying a multi-cultural meal of pizza and Chinese food.
“We were shocked to learn there wasn’t a food club [on campus],” McGrady said.
Though members of the group met last night for an informal meeting, Nguyen and McGrady said the group’s first official meeting will be in November.
The pair said they have brainstormed tentative plans for the club, including providing cooking classes and social events such as “Breakfast for Dinner” and Iron Chef competitions.
In addition to competitions and cooking classes, McGrady and Nguyen said they hope NUeats will be able to assist students in making the switch from dependency on the dining hall as a freshman to having a full kitchen at your disposal as an upperclassman.
Nguyen said the group will advise students on how to cook wallet-friendly meals in a residence hall kitchen.
Abigail Lupien, a freshman architecture major, said that would be a draw for her to join the club.
“I’d be interested in joining [NUeats],” she said. “I’d probably want to learn more that you could do with a MicroFridge. We don’t have a big community kitchen in my dorm. Instead of throwing Easy Mac in, there could be different things we could do.”
Jason Foster, assistant director of Student Activities and Leadership, said there has never been a recognized student group similar to NUeats.
“[NUeats] has a niche on campus and I’m looking forward to having students fill it,” said Foster.
McGrady said the biggest obstacle the club has faced is the food safety requirement. For any cooking related activity, the proper supervision by an authorized food-related official is required. Nguyen said NUeats is open to Northeastern students, regardless of previous experience.
“Anyone [is welcome], beginners and experts, we highly encourage it,” McGrady said.
Tony Melrose, a junior business administration major, said he is the most excited for the cooking competitions.
“I personally enjoy cooking and consider myself to be somewhat of a chef,” said Melrose.
Any student interested in joining should check out the Facebook group, NUeats, or e-mail the officers at [email protected].
