Northeastern’s women’s basketball team (1-10, 0-2 CAA) lost on the road against the Drexel Dragons (6-6, 2-0 CAA) 70-55 in its second conference game of the season Jan. 5.
The Huskies notched the first two points of the game off a layup from freshman center Alyssa Staten, but from there, it was the Dragons’ game. By the end of the first quarter, Drexel was up 23-13. Through the second quarter, Drexel continued to stay ahead, outscoring the Huskies 18-12.
In the second half, the Huskies produced more of a fight, with both teams scoring 19 points in the third quarter. The Huskies’ best quarter was the fourth, where they outscored the Dragons 11-10, but it was too late. Drexel’s dominance in the beginning of the game was too much for the Huskies to catch up with, leading to their loss 70-55.
Drexel dominated the Huskies on fast break points, scoring 19 on them alone while Northeastern failed to capitalize on any fast break opportunities. Drexel was also huge on capitalizing on Northeastern’s mistakes, as they scored 28 points off turnovers, while Northeastern only managed to score a single basket off a Drexel mistake.
Redshirt sophomore guard Abby Jegede was a bright spot for the Huskies, as she has been all season. Jegede led the team with 14 points, three steals and four rebounds. Other top scorers for the Huskies included sophomore guard Yirsy Quéliz with 12 and redshirt junior guard Natalie Larrañaga with 11. Staten was huge for the Huskies under the rim, coming away with a career-high fourteen rebounds, leading both teams. She also scored eight points.
The Huskies next matchup comes against University of North Carolina Wilmington Seahawks (7-8, 1-1 CAA) at home Jan. 12, where they will look to pick up their first home win of the season.
