Due to the raging wildfires overtaking Los Angeles, the live announcement of the 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild, or SAG, Awards nominations, scheduled for Jan. 8, was canceled. The nominations were instead revealed on the SAG Awards website.
Celebrating the outstanding performances featured in television series including “Shōgun” and “The Bear,” as well as films like “Wicked” and “A Complete Unknown,” the awards ceremony will take place in the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. EST. The ceremony will also be streamed live on Netflix.
“Wicked” dominated five categories for this year’s film nominations, with Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey all being recognized for their performances. Fans expressed their congratulations on X, with one user commenting, “They all deserve it, this movie is killing it!”
Following close behind was the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown,” which was nominated for four categories, including Timothée Chalamet for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. This marks Chalamet’s seventh SAG award nomination, making him the youngest actor to achieve this milestone at just 29 years old.
“Anora” and “Emilia Pérez” were tied with three nominations each, the first time both Mikey Madison and Karla Sofía Gascón were nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. Gascón, in particular, received praise as the first openly transgender performer to be nominated in a solo category.
With three SAG nominations, this puts “Emilia Pérez” at 34 nominations total, the most for any film this awards season so far. While an amazing accomplishment, the film has been met with intense backlash from viewers, many of whom believe that it does not merit the acclaim it has been receiving.
Critics and netizens alike have called out the movie’s clumsy approach to transgender issues and its inaccurate depiction of Mexico. The fact that it is a musical seems to have only worsened its reception from the general public, as TikTok users have been bashing the film’s soundtrack since its release.
For television, “Shōgun” took the lead with five nominations, continuing its successful momentum after sweeping the Emmys and the Golden Globes. “The Bear” also did well, with Ayo Edebiri and Liza Colón-Zayas both receiving nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series.
Cristin Milioti and Colin Farrell were both nominated for their performances in “The Penguin,” with this being Milioti’s first SAG nomination. While she previously lost the Golden Globe to Jodie Foster not even a month ago, fans are hopeful that she can take home the win at this year’s SAG Awards.
Surprisingly, many prominent A-listers, such as Nicole Kidman in “Babygirl” and Angelina Jolie in “Maria,” were not nominated, upsetting fans. In the case of Jolie, fans took to X to express their displeasure, with one user posting, “i’m sorry but angelina jolie not being nominated at SAG for her performance in ‘maria’ (2024) is beyond outrageous to me. i believe no other living actress could have done justice to maria callas the way she did.”
Sebastian Stan was not nominated for “A Different Man” or his performance as Donald Trump in “The Apprentice” either, despite his co-star, Jeremy Strong, being nominated for his supporting role of Roy Cohn. While some fans felt Stan had been robbed, Strong’s nomination was widely considered well-deserved, bolstered by the glowing reviews he received for his nuanced portrayal of Cohn.
Demi Moore received her first SAG nomination since 2007 for “The Substance,” fresh from her recent victory at the Golden Globes for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Unfortunately, her co-star Margaret Qualley was not nominated, causing many users to feel she was snubbed as well. Coupled with the fact that “Nosferatu” did not receive any nominations, people expressed their disappointment with the lack of horror representation throughout the awards circuit.
One X user commented, “no margaret qualley nomination at the sag awards… no nosferatu nominations (acting wise) this entire award season… why do these award shows hate horror movies.”
With the SAG Awards often acting as a precursor to the Oscars, many of these nominees reappeared at the Academy Awards, and some of the overlooked performances like “Nosferatu” secured an Oscar nomination.
