The Northeastern volleyball team has brought on Brendan McGourn to be the team’s new head coach, according to an announcement on social media and on the athletics website Jan. 31.
McGourn was an assistant volleyball coach at Fairfield University for the last two years. During his time with the Stags, the volleyball team won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships both seasons and had a 43-19 record. Previously, he coached at Yale University for eight seasons and helped steer the Bulldogs to four Ivy League championships.
“Northeastern’s commitment to excellence both academically and athletically is something I deeply admire, and I am excited to help build a program that reflects those values,” McGourn said in an announcement on the Northeastern Athletics website. “My focus will be on creating a culture of hard work, teamwork, and continuous improvement, both on and off the court. I can’t wait to get started and work with our student-athletes to achieve greatness together.”
The hiring comes after the team announced Dec. 4 that Lenika Vazquez would not be returning as head coach for the Huskies.
Last season, the Huskies were 10-16 and failed to make it to the CAA tournament. They were strong at home with an 8-3 record, but on the road, the Huskies only managed to get one win in 12 games. Brendan McGourn named new Northeastern volleyball head coach
“We are thrilled to welcome Brendan as the next head coach of our program here at Northeastern,” said Northeastern Director of Athletics and Recreation Jim Madigan, via a statement on Northeastern Athletics’ website. “Brendan has a proven track record for recruiting student-athletes who can compete athletically and thrive academically at the highest levels, and his commitment to the holistic development of our student-athletes stood out to us from the start. The combination of his passion and technical expertise of the sport greatly excites us for the future of our women’s volleyball program under his leadership.”
