Details for the future of Northeastern’s co-op program remain vague following President Joseph Aoun and Provost Stephen Director’s announcement last week that the university would consider shifting toward four-year degrees.
During joint State of the University addresses at the annual town meeting last Wednesday, President Aoun and Director each mentioned expanding students’ abilities to pursue a four-year undergraduate program as Northeastern determines the best course for its future, according to a statement released by the university on Friday.
The university’s administration believes expanding the four-year program offerings is worth exploring very seriously over the coming months, according to the statement.
The fact that Aoun and Director announced the issue makes it important, said interim university spokesperson Jim Chiavelli. There is no set timetable, but it is an urgent issue the administration wants to study and begin discussions on, he said.
Jack Greene, interim vice provost of experiential education, said that if the university changes anything at all, it is going to require a lot of study and discussion.
“This is a very preliminary discussion,” Greene said. “There hasn’t been a big discussion about this among the deans. It’s really an open question right now
