Most players would hate to view a line of zeroes in the post-game box score. But for junior goalkeeper Scott Partridge, a line of zeroes became a welcome habit this season.
Partridge posted a school record and Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) leading 10 shutouts in net this season for the men’s soccer team, including one in the conference semifinals against UNC Wilmington, earning him this week’s Huntington News Player of the Week honors.
The Huskies won that game 5-3 in penalty kicks before falling to George Mason 1-0 in the CAA championship game Sunday.
“The defense let in one the whole tournament, unfortunately it came in the final game. Overall, we feel like we did a good job in the back,” Partridge said.
Partridge played every minute for the Huskies this season and set school records in goals against average (0.73) and minutes played (2100). His 99 saves on the season rank fourth in school single-season history.
Despite his lofty personal achievements, Partridge is quick to point to the success of the team, which went 7-5-9 (5-2-4 CAA), good for fifth in the conference.
“The success [this season] has definitely shown,” he said. “Last year we made it to the quarterfinals. The goal every year is to improve two steps forward this year and hopefully we can take another step forward next year.”
The Whitinsville native is majoring in economics with a minor in business. He transferred from the University of Hartford after playing in three games there in 2006. Last season for the Huskies, he posted a 1-1 record in four games. For next season, Partridge said he hopes the team can take it even further.
“Hopefully we can get an NCAA tournament bid and hopefully that will come with a CAA championship,” he said. “Getting so close [this year] you get a real good taste of what it feels like to win, and with a lot of guys returning, we’re going to be hungry for that championship next year.”
