In 2024, 1,537 students were accepted into Northeastern University through the N.U.in Program. This meant instead of looking forward to a Mike’s Pastry, students could fantasize about authentic Italian pastries, flaky French croissants, or even Germany’s famous bratwursts.
Northeastern has 13 campuses, three of which are undergraduate campuses in Boston, Oakland and London. However, not counted in its official network of campuses are the nine locations across Europe where students are enrolled in the N.U.in Program, a Northeastern program that sends students abroad for their first semester. N.U.in offers students the chance to experience their first four months at Northeastern abroad at a “host university,” an institution linked with Northeastern so school credits can easily transfer, since each class taken corresponds to a course at Northeastern.
N.U.in site locations for the Class of 2029 were released Feb. 13, 2024. This year, there are nine locations available for students to pick from, after N.U.in Paris was cut from the site selection. The N.U.in Paris program ran for two years, but in fall 2024, students experienced issues with extreme flooding in university housing.
Site location is partly determined through a student’s major since different locations offer different courses. The day before locations are released, Northeastern provides prospective students with a list of locations they can choose from, and the next day, students scramble to acquire their top location. If a location is filled up, a waitlist process begins.
Last year, visa information was provided to students between late April to late May. If a visa for an N.U.in location is needed, it is a student’s responsibility to obtain their visa before the start of their program. Northeastern recommends that incoming freshmen stay on top of the visa process.
Students are also given the option to join a group flight with other N.U.in students out of a major airport such as Boston Logan International Airport or Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
Academic registration for fall classes takes place during the summer. In 2024, an initial course selection form was sent out to students in May. Students register for four courses and have the option to take an additional one credit course. There are a limited number of classes for certain majors.
Though booking flights, registering for classes and securing visas were experiences shared among every N.U.in participant, each student faced vastly different experiences in their respective countries during the months to come. Each partner location offered different amenities, food, cultural experiences, academic environments and more.
