Men’s hockey goalie honored by Hockey East
Junior goalie Brad Thiessen was named Hockey East’s ITECH Goaltender of the Month for November, the conference announced Tuesday.
Backed by the strong play of their goaltender, the Huskies went 5-2-1 in November, a month which saw them play five games against a nationally-ranked opponent. Thiessen finished the month with 238 saves for a .926 save percentage and a 2.35 goals-against-average.
The Huskies are 10-3-2 on the season and first in Hockey East with a 7-2-1 conference mark. They are currently sixth in the USCHO.com/CBS College Sports poll and will finish play for the 2008 calender year when the host Maine (7-4-1, 4-3-1 Hockey East) Friday at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena.

Women’s soccer team receives academic honor
For the fifth straight year, the women’s soccer team qualified for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award.
To earn the award, a team must have a combined GPA of 3.0. The Huskies checked in with a 3.39 mark.
Their strong work in the classroom showed on the field as well. The team posted a 14-9-2 overall record and won the Colonial Athletic Association Championship before falling 4-0 to Boston College in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Senior defender and co-captain Brenna Matthews was also named to the NEWISA Senior Bowl, which will take place Sunday, Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. at Salem State College.

Pair of Husky gridiron stars honored by writers
Senior tight end and tri-captain Brian Mandeville and junior linebacker Phil Higgins were named to the All-New England team, the New England Football Writers announced Wednesday. The pair will be honored at the annual New England Football Writers Banquet in Wilmington Dec. 11.
Despite missing four games with a knee injury, Mandeville finished the year with 24 catches for 337 yards and two touchdowns. His 337 yards ranked him third on the Huskies. This is his second consecutive selection to the All-New England team.
Higgins stepped into a starting role in 2008 and made 122 tackles, the fifth highest single-season total in Northeastern history and was also good for first in the Colonial Athletic Association. He had six games of 10-plus tackles this season, including a career high 16 at Hofstra Nov. 15.
In his Husky career, Mandeville snagged 63 passes for 863 yards and seven touchdowns.
