Just across the Charles River at MIT, the women’s track team dominated the Greater Boston Championship. In the small field of only five teams, Northeastern won in a landslide, beating second place Harvard by over 100 points.
The win was a total team effort. Out of the seventeen events during the meet Northeastern had nine first place finishes.
One of the top performers of the day was Ahndraea Allen, who earned a first place finish in the 200-meter dash and second in the 55-meter dash. In the 200-meter race, Allen said she “felt good, I haven’t been running my best as of late, but I feel I’m getting better, working harder than I was in the beginning of the year.”
The team got off to a fast start with Zara Northover and Jessica Titus finishing first and second in the shot put, respectively. From beginning to end the Huskies took the Johnson Athletic Center, last Saturday afternoon, and made it their home. They didn’t finish an event any worse than fifth place. The lady Huskies stole the top three spots in three events, the 55 and 200-meter races, along with the pole vault. They also finished in the top two in the high jump, long jump, and shot put.
Team co-captain Ebony Jack was very pleased with the team’s performance.
“It was great, it was good to have one of those meets because everyone showed up and did what they had to do, and didn’t take it for granted,” said Jack, who finished third in both the 200 and 55 meter races.
Throughout the meet, the women were enthusiastic. They were constantly cheering for their teammates during the events, trying to give them extra motivation to do their best. The team spirit was high throughout the day, even toward the end of the meet when they were the clear favorite to win.
NU coach Sherman Hart was very pleased with his teams performance. “I felt we performed extremely well today, I think we’re on target to try to win the America East Championship, this was the first of four championships in a row,” said Hart.
When asked how they feel about the team in the upcoming weeks, Jack replied, “We have a whole lot of talent on the team, a lot of freshmen have great talent and the upperclassmen are coming into their own, everyone is rising to the challenge.”
The Huskies compete next at the America East Championships on Feb. 21 and 22 at Boston University.
