In a season that has been more “As the World Turns” than “Hoosiers,” the men’s basketball team has had another wrench thrown in what has been a turbulent, yet successful basketball campaign.
The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) has made overtures to Northeastern’s athletics department. The conference — which features former America East members as Delaware, Hofstra and Towson — wants to expand from 10 teams to 12.
According to the Boston Globe, the university’s interests are piqued.
“The Colonial Athletic Association contacted Northeastern’s Athletics department about joining the league,” said Matt Bourque, assistant America East commissioner responsible for communications. “As far as we know, they [NU] did not say no.”
If the Huskies were to leave the America East, it would gut the conference’s automatic bid for the NCAA tournament in basketball. The league would lose the bid because it would not have six teams in the conference together for at least five years, which is the NCAA minimum.
It is not known whether the focus of the exodus will be solely upon basketball, or whether it will involve other university athletic programs as well.
A president’s meeting for the America East on Feb. 21 is a key date, as it could determine the financial and competitive future of the program for years to come.
After the three aforementioned schools left the conference, Albany, Stony Brook and Binghamton were added to compensate for the loss.
Word of the possible move first came to focus around the time freshman standout Jose Juan Barea was held out of two contests after an NCAA flap.
In addition, forwards Sylbrin Robinson and Jesse Dunn have missed substantial time due to injuries. Robinson returned to action for the Vermont contest last Saturday.
