The women’s track team captured their first America East Championship since 1998. The Huskies ran past the hosting Terriers by 49 points in the field of eight teams last weekend at Boston University.
The meet started on the right track, when the Huskies finished in the top three spots in the 55-meter race. Ebony Jack finished first with a time of 7.12 seconds, followed by teammates Jordine Kimbrel and Ahndraea Allen.
Allen was voted the most outstanding performer at the America East Championships by the conference coaches. She finished first in the 200 and 400-meter races. In the 200, she set a meet record with a time of 24.49. Kimbrel was right behind Allen, finishing second in the 200 and 400-meter races.
Zara Northover, a freshman thrower, posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with a throw of 51’8.5″ in the shot put, which gave her a first place finish. Northover also finished second in the weight throw.
The Huskies also captured the two top spots in the high jump. Janel Kozlowski finished first, clearing 1.73 meters, with Nicole Parker finishing second.
Parker also competed in the indoor Pentathlon, which is part of the America East Championship, held at an earlier date. The Pentathlon consists of five different events, the 55-meter hurdles, the long jump, the shot put, and the 800-meter race. She finished first in three out of the five events.
The Huskies earned runner-up finishes from DaviAnn Brown in the 500-meter race, Joane Merlain in the 800-meter, and Courtney MacLaren in the pole vault.
The athletes weren’t the only ones that were awarded last weekend. Northeastern coaches were named Coaching Staff of the Year in the America East. The team is led by Sherman Hart.
The women’s track team has finished first in its last two meets. This weekend, they will try to continue their streak when they compete in the New England Championship at Smith College.
