After a season that has been mixed with serious down turns, major disappointments and a few surprise endings, the dam finally burst.
Saturday, during a 6-3 loss to Boston College which sent Northeastern to its sixth loss in seven games, the Huskies lost its composure and it cost them dearly.
In the second and third period, NU outshot BC 28-18 after being outshot in the opening frame, 13-2.
During that second period, which started with NU down 2-0, the Huskies were briefly on the power play before Trevor Reschny slammed Dave Spina into the boards from behind and was given the gate for the remainder of the game. He also was charged with a five minute major for hitting from behind which was served by Steve Sanders.
Then, after BC’s Stephan Gionta scored a goal on that power play, Mike Ryan drilled the goal scorer from behind well after the goal had been scored. Ryan was sent to the sin bin and BC subsequently scored on the ensuing power play.
“That’s the kind of stuff you expect from freshmen,” said Northeastern coach Bruce Crowder. “Not guys with C’s and A’s on their jersey.”
Minus one A (Reschny) and a C (Ryan), NU received an L. The Huskies dropped a 5-2 Friday decision at Kelley Rink on Chestnut Hill, giving BC a 4-0 sweep of the season series that included a 5-2 Eagle win in the opening round of the Beanpot.
The Huskies are now tied with Lowell following the Riverhawks’ 2-2 tie with Merrimack last night.
On Saturday, the Huskies were thoroughly dominated in the first period and fell behind 4-0 in the second when they finally decided to make a run. Unfortunately for NU, eight power play chances hurt their odds of winning.
“That definitely helped us,” said BC coach Jerry York. “I like that team over there. I don’t think the record is indicative of how good they are.”
Mike Gilhooly surrendered the same sentiment about BC’s three power play goals.
“We can’t give them that many opportunities,” said Gilhooly, who made 25 saves in Saturday’s loss. “Who are we kidding? They’re a great team and they showed it to us tonight.”
The Huskies came back within 4-1 by the end of the second thanks in large part to Brian Swiniarski’s heads-up play off the face off. He quickly ripped a wrister that beat Matti Kaltianen through his legs to cut the lead to three.
Entering the third period with a man advantage, Mike Morris cut the lead to two when he knocked home a rebound off a Jason Guerriero slap shot from the blue line.
Less than three minutes later, the Huskies were down by three again when Ben Eaves virtually imitated Morris’ score by burying a rebound over Gilhooly’s shoulder from the near side.
Chris Collins made it 6-2 less than a minute later when he skated in, decked Gilhooly and slid the puck past Gilhooly’s stick side.
Morris scored his second just two minutes after that when he got a pass from Guerriero across the crease and buried his second of the night.
“I got a great feed from Jason,” said Morris. “He put it right on my stick and I knocked it in.”
Friday night brought more of the same as NU dropped three goals in the first period and never fully recovered.
The Huskies did get it to within 4-2 and Ryan had two breakaways to get NU closer. Unfortunately, they were never able to capitalize, as Kaltianen made two diving stops.
The Huskies host Merrimack on Friday and face Lowell on Saturday at Tsongas Arena in the season finale.
“Every point is important,” said Morris. “We have to get as many as we can.”
Crowder agreed. “We’re going to have fun this week in practice and get back to basics,” he said.
“We’re getting down to the wire,” said Gilhooly. “This is crunch time.”
