Recently, I’ve read an article in The Boston Globe, another in The Boston Herald, and one in the BU Daily Free Press regarding Northeastern’s possible move to the Colonial Athletic Conference, and I’m not sure how to react.
I like the idea that NU is looking to move in the right direction, but I’m not a big fan of change.
I understand nothing has happened yet, but I do know that this is the third story I’ve read about it.
Every sport, with the exception of football and both hockey teams, would move to the new conference.
Men’s basketball leaves the America East, setting in motion the long standing problem of not having enough members of the conference to gain an NCAA bid to the tournament. BU, which went to the tournament last season by winning the America East Championships at Matthews Arena, would probably feel the hit the most.
Just like when Towson, Delaware, Drexel and Hofstra left the America East, NU leaving would force the America East commissioners to find another team to join the league.
Not to mention the fact that the group the left did so because they chose not to travel to the northeast but rather stay around their area.
Women’s basketball would also lose that right to play against the AE teams on a consistent basis such as Vermont, BU and New Hampshire.
Traveling for both of these teams that much would place a great deal of physical and psychological duress on the clubs as well as their coaches.
Then, I worry about rivalries. I love the way things are right now. I love the fact we play BU as many times as we do. I love the fact we have all our rivals within a short distance. Maine, BU and Vermont are solid teams. I would hate to lose that rivalry and, even though the Huskies would probably still play BU in the regular season, it wouldn’t mean as much.
The best rivalry in women’s hockey was Harvard and Northeastern. Then NU switched to women’s Hockey East. And although they still play each other, it has nothing to do with the league, only in the pairwise rankings.
Our track and field teams have been so successful in the America East recently. They’ve been dominating their America East competition, as has the swimming and diving teams.
I think Northeastern should move into different leagues in only a select few sports — for example, field hockey.
Field hockey would play perennial powerhouse Old Dominion on the regular schedule. Swimming and diving would be great if they could sneak into the Big East with Boston College and develop that cross-town rivalry.
But basketball, it would hurt. Though NU would once again be playing Delaware, Drexel, Towson and Hofstra, three of those teams have taken a step back where I think NU, BU and Hartford have emerged as much better and far deeper squads.
On Sunday, I will be in attendance for the regular season finale at Solomon Court against Boston University. I’m excited because, even though NU can’t win the regular season title, they have taken two games already from the Terriers and the final game could make a difference on whether the Dogs get the third or the sixth seed.
This is what it’s all about. It’s all about playing the most hated team this side of the Yankees, playing on your home court in the last game of the season and it’s in your own conference. It doesn’t get any better than that.
I really want to see NU stay in the America East. I understand that there could be more money or major challenges, but I really think that what Ron Everhart and Willette White are trying to build would not be the scale of which it is in America East. Everhart, as I mentioned last week, has created a tremendous amount of enthusiasm through his team.
Let’s preserve the opportunity to give them a win in the America East. Let’s stay home and run the table.
In the Locker Room:
The baseball team would no longer be in the America East which I think would be a side step. I think both levels of competition are pretty good, with the slight advantage to the CAC … Two games left in Hockey East and it’s all tied up. NU plays Merrimack on Friday and Lowell plays Providence. Then, the two teams play each other on Saturday. Mike Gilhooly called it crunch time. I think I’d have to agree on that … Not to be outdone, the ladies also have a huge weekend of scoreboard watching. NU plays Quinnipiac twice this weekend while UConn and Maine play a double. UConn is tied for third with NU with nine points while Maine trails by a point. The top four teams make it and, if Maine wins both, NU will be eliminated.
