As the curtains raise on the Marc Jacobs 2003 spring collection runway, Gisele Bundchen saunters out in a silk halter dress, in shocking baby pink that is only held up by two strings wrapped loosely around her neck. She is wearing a 1940s inspired pink heels, with a high ponytail hairdo, and winged eyeliner: all the magazines go nuts.
The inspiration of the icons of the 40s and 50s like Lana Turner, Jayne Mansfield and Marilyn Monroe is popping up on runways and in the closets of Northeastern students. Angela Gaimari, a middler journalism major, was spotted sporting her signature red lipstick and rocking a 1940s-inspired yellow flower print sun dress. Gaimari lives in Jamaica Plain, loves to shop, interns at Stuff at Night and did a co-op at Jane magazine. She also attends rock shows to further satisfy her interests. Overall, this made her the perfect style candidate for Man on the Street, as well as the picture of perfection for this blossoming spring season. Marc Jacobs would be proud.
The Northeastern News: Can you describe your style or look that you are trying to achieve?
Angela Gaimari: Cheap and Chic. I like to wear things that are different and cheap. I would not go to an expensive boutique to buy stuff, unless it is incredible.
The News: That seems hard to do. Where do you shop?
Gaimari: I like the Garment District, the Salvation Army, Maude Mango: a Garment District-like store in Southie. I also like The Closet Upstairs.
The News: You mentioned that you interned at Jane Magazine and at Stuff at Night, did you get any style tips working there?
Gaimari: I worked in the same building as W, Details and, of course, Jane magazine and everyone dressed very cool for work. Everyone liked to wear high heels. They would get bags full of clothes for fashion shoots ranging from Old Navy to Couture. I always did my own thing, and felt a little unfashionable at work. I like to dress my own way.
The News: What did you wear to work?
Gaimari: I used to wear a bandana tied around the front of my head tying into a little bow, it was very Rockabilly. A month after I left, it was their fashion DIY [Do-It-Yourself] of the month.
The News: What would be your ideal outfit?
Gaimari: I love summer clothes, picnic wear. I love gingham dresses, eyelet tops with puff sleeves, capri pants and flowers in my hair. I also like some sparkly jewelry, red lipstick and liquid eyeliner.
The News: You are very much inspired by the retro film stars of the 1940s and ’50s. Which of them inspired your fashion sense?
Gaimari: Jayne Mansfield, Marilyn Monroe, I also like Twiggy even though she is from the 60s. I like a lot of fashion designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Dior and Blumarine. I love Heatherette.
The News: Any local designers that you would like to plug?
Gaimari: Eddie Kent, he does very colorful, pink flamingos, John Waters obsessed stuff. Also, Angela Zanpell, she makes Rockabilly, cherry halter tops, poodle skirts with different prints such as martini glasses.
