I attend Northeastern and am writing in response to the article “Girls Gone Wild” (7/23) written by Najila Moussa. I would like to say that I attended that audition as a volunteer to help my friend (who is a bouncer) pick the girls for Coyote Ugly’s Saloon. I was not auditioning and what she quoted from me is completely incorrect. I told Moussa that I think this job would be a fun experience for the girls but they’re going to have to handle the perverted guys. However, she quoted me as saying, “I can handle perverted men.” Now, if you understand the job description of this bar, you would understand why I am upset that she made it sound as though I am an employee there.
Moussa did not see any girls dance therefore can not say half of the things she said about the girls dancing. She wasn’t allowed to go into the audition room to see it. She followed us but the bouncers stopped her. Another assumption she made was about the girls drinking at the bar. The bar wasn’t even open for the girls to drink, it was closed so that the audition can be held. Any girl that was suspected of drinking was to be sent home.
Another thing she wrote that really offended me was: “Some were overweight and some had perfect figures.” That line is biased and she’s being judgmental in a paper. I was always taught to never give your opinion in a paper unless it’s an editorial. For her to judge who has perfect figures and who is overweight is just showing she did not pay enough attention in Newswriting class.
I, along with a few of my friends who attend Northeastern, were really offended by this article. The fact that she wasn’t even allowed to see the audition made me upset that she made assumptions about the dancing. I’ve always admired the Northeastern News and read it often, but I think this is one of the first times I’ve been upset about an article.
