It’s a new year, students of Northeastern, time to get sentimental. Since our year-long calendar affords us few schedule breaks, the fall semester is really where our year turns. So a new year’s resolution list seems like the right thing to do, a list of expectations the students and administration should await in this upcoming year. Expect Northeastern to become a safer place. Senior Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Philomena Mantella posted a Coordinator of Sexual Assault Services position to be filled as soon as possible, with hopefully more rape crisis resources to be added. If the pace of this initiative is too slow for you, be sure to make your voice heard. Safety from all crimes, not just rape, should be of utmost importance in this community. Expect your Internet service to improve. Recently, Northeastern was one of four colleges awarded the CIO 100 award from IDG’s CIO Magazine, a magazine that “recognizes organizations around the world that excel in positive business performance through resourceful IT management and practices.” In layman’s terms it means that Northeastern is a positive example of using their limited resources to the fullest capacity. However, the Internet service is still a work in progress, and technology is ever evolving, so be patient. Expect your Northeastern degree to increase in value. Five years ago the average SAT score of a Northeastern freshman was 1092. Now it’s 1201. In five years time, Northeastern has markedly improved in many areas and is no longer just a co-op school but an up-and-coming institution of higher education. Need further proof? Northeastern did not accept one student off the waiting list this year and for every eight applications there was only one freshman seat available. This school is quickly establishing itself as worthy of attending as its urban contemporaries Boston University and Boston College. And you students of Northeastern, don’t think you are free of expectations as well. Support your athletic teams. While you were busy dumping on them last year, voting them the worst sports team on campus, the NU football team managed to surpass all expectations by winning the Atlantic-10 and advancing to the playoffs. Cinderella season, we think not. The Huskies are already 2-0 on the season with a 78-6 thrashing of Stonehill and a 51-0 shutout of Albany. Head over to Parson’s Field on Saturdays this year, you might just find something there worth cheering about. Stop being apathetic about your apathy. Take initiative to make Northeastern a better place. With almost 200 student groups on campus ranging from Student Government Association to the Northeastern University Bisexual, Lesbian and Gay Association (NUBiLAGA) to the Ultimate Frisbee Club, there is certainly something at the university you find of interest. And if not, there are no excuses, you can begin your own. Just visit the Student Activities Office (228 CSC) to find out how. There is a lot more to being a student here than just coasting through classes and co-op and partying on weekends. Take this year and devote yourself to making something of the college experience you keep hearing about. It’s there, it’s up to you to make the most of it.
Make this year at NU count
