Sorority Sigma Sigma Sigma’s probation term ended just as Sigma Delta Tau’s (SDT) began, as both groups were penalized for holding events that were not properly registered through the school. The president and vice president of Panhellenic Council and the chair of Greek Council, all from SDT, were forced to step down after a hearing in front of the Greek Executive Council August 25. According to SDT President Lauren Sanderson, their probation status resulted from holding an “unregistered event” and the “behavior of certain individuals.” “The school didn’t know that we were going away for the formal, that’s why it was a big deal,” Sanderson said. “There were reports that were sent back to the school.” In May, the SDT members spent a weekend at a hotel in New Hampshire, an event that was not registered through the university. Despite the fact that sorority saw this as a weekend getaway, they said, the university saw it as a sorority event. “[A weekend getaway is] the way that we were really looking at it, but because of the fact that it was a majority of the sisters that were there, it was still an event, and any event has to be registered,” Sanderson said. The sorority held a registered formal at Jillian’s on Lansdowne Street after the hotel weekend. The terms of their probation require that they vacate all executive positions in Greek Council and Panhellinic Council and complete a variety of other sanctions through the school and through their national chapter. Acting Chair of Greek Council Kerri Murphy said that they will be “reorganizing and reinterviewing people” to fill the vacant position. The probation will last until the end of the semester, and until then, Sanderson said that SDT will “reevaluate how we’re running internally.” “It’s not the best situation to be in, but it’s not the end of the world either,” she said. “We’re looking forward to a different semester, it’s not necessarily going to be better or worse, just different.” SDT will still be able to participate in recruitment, which starts Sunday, and any other Greek events. They will still hold some positions in Panhellinic Council and, according to Sanderson, their spring formal will be “in Boston, and it will be registered.” The Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority was placed on probation this summer for holding an unregistered event. In the spring, they hosted “Sigma Man of the Year” at a bar, without clearing it through the school. They served their probation term and completed their sanctions over the summer, and will now be eligible to run for positions on Greek and Panhellinic Councils. The Sigmas declined to comment because their national chapter does not allow them to speak to the media. Student Activities Advisor Laura Ramsdell said that if the sororities had properly registered their events, they would not have been placed on probation. “There were not serious incidents,” Ramsdell said. “Contracts were not secured for events. When this happens, organizations put themselves and the university at risk.”
