The passing of the “Godfather of MDMA”

Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin, world-renown medicinal chemist known for creating a wide variety of psychoactive drugs and introducing MDMA (commonly referred to as ecstasy) as a psychopharmaceutical aid, died yesterday after struggling with liver cancer and various other health complications for several years, according to the Erowid Character Vault. Shulgin's research was controversial due to his experimentation on himself and his (consenting) friends and family with the MDMA analogs that he synthesized.

For many techies, San Francisco was the place to be today, at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). This year’s conference runs from June 2-4, and this morning’s presentation revealed a new iOS for iPhone, as well as a new operating system for Mac computers, Yosemite.

New Proposal to Cut Carbon Emissions

On Monday, June 2, the chief of the Environmental Protection Agency will propose a plan to dramatically cut carbon emissions in the United States. The plan calls for 30 percent cuts by 2030, and is mostly targeted at coal power plants that create much of the emissions the EPA is fighting today. On Saturday, Obama backed his actions by explaining that the planet must be a suitable place to live for children today, which is his responsibility both as the president and as a parent.

The young band out of Lilitz, Pennsylvania by the name The Districts manage to capture all three. They consist of Rob Grote (vocals, guitar), Mark Larson (guitar), Connor Jacobus (bass) and Braden Lawrence (percussion).

With crude humor, spontaneously graphic death scenes and even a short drug-induced musical number, “A Million Ways to Die in the West” was everything we expected from writer, director and star Seth MacFarlane. From the not-so-subtle sexual innuendos to the quick dialogue littered with expletives, the movie was filled with MacFarlane’s trademarks, even including a smattering of Hollywood references to both the actors’ and the director’s previous works.

On Sunday, May 25, President Barack Obama visited soldiers stationed in Afghanistan during a surprise visit to the Middle East. Obama traveled with country singer Brad Paisley, who performed for the soldiers in honor of Memorial Day weekend and their commitment to the military. During the visit to Bagram Air Base, Obama made a speech to the troops, thanking them for their service to the U.S. as well as to Afghanistan. He also pleased the crowd with good news.

Before their show, Magic Man joked that they were happy someone was interviewing them so they knew there would be at least one person in the crowd. This couldn’t be further from the truth as a packed room cheered on the Boston-based group, but it’s this kind of self-deprecating humor and underestimation of their own success that makes the band just so magical.

Charlie's, which has held its own since 1927, is famous for being one of few eateries to serve African-Americans during the era of segregation, and for maintaining its welcoming family atmosphere and overall appearance since its debut. The Manjourides family, which has managed the store for two generations, announced the diner’s closing in a Twitter post on May 12.
