Bouvé dean to leave post after 13 years

December 2, 2010
Bouvé College of Health Sciences Dean Stephen Zoloth announced his resignation in an e-mail to the college’s faculty and staff last Tuesday. “I have always thrived on new challenges, and on reflection, I think that now is a good time to look for new ways to make an impact,” he said in the e-mail. “Therefore, I have told the President and Provost that I have decided to step down as dean.”

New OSCCR director starts Monday: Mary Wegmann will take over as director of the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (OSCCR) Monday. She will replace Colleen Ryan, who was appointed August 2009.

Homecoming this week

This year’s Homecoming theme, “There’s No Place Like Northeastern,” is intended to promote unity among the members of the multifaceted university community. “We are a school where people are always coming and going,” said Brittiny Rae Gagnon, junior health science major and Homecoming Committee co-chair. “They’re going away on co-op or study abroad, but they all come back here to Northeastern in Boston.”

Aoun promotes international work

President Joseph Aoun made an appearance in front of the Student Government Association (SGA) on Monday evening to talk about international co-op. Specifically, he said students aren’t doing enough of it.

New technology in Snell part of test-run, ends this week

Student reaction to a media station set up for group use in Snell Library two weeks ago has been overwhelmingly positive; unfortunately for those who have yet to try the new product, it will be gone by the end of this week. The product, called the Mediascape, consists of a four-stool set-up, a high-top table and two attached flat screen monitors on the first floor for students working in groups to plug their laptops into and use for display.

Obituary: Andy Prior, recent ASL graduate, mentor

Northeastern students and faculty remember recent graduate Andy Prior as a remarkable man who went out of his way to help others, from fellow sign language interpreters to deaf children and students. The 23-year-old American Sign Language/English Interpretation major, who graduated in May with a Bachelor of Arts degree, was struck by an SUV at around 11:45 p.m. Sunday on Tremont Street near the Roxbury Crossing T Station in Roxbury while riding his Vespa scooter.

Arrest outside Willis Hall

A man was arrested outside Willis Hall Tuesday after fleeing the scene of an attempted robbery at Clemente Park in the Fens, according to the Boston Police Department (BPD).

Two fire engines responded around 7:30 p.m. last night to an alarm in the Curry Student Center, which was triggered when a refrigerator compressor caught fire in the basement kitchen, a Boston Fire Department chief on site said. The building was evacuated briefly -- interrupting the SGA’s homecoming preparation activities -- and the fire department declared it safe to reenter within a half hour.

Push for gender-neutral

In the two years Northeastern’s Gender Neutral Housing Living Learning Community (LLC) has existed, every bed has been filled. Resident Student Association (RSA) and Student Government Association (SGA) executives say student interest in the LLC is still growing, but there’s only one problem: The only rooms currently offered are in International Village (INV).

Heroin arrest in NUPD building

Boston Police Department (BPD) officers arrested one man and summonsed another Saturday night after the men were allegedly attempting to inject heroin in a bathroom in 716 Columbus Ave., the same building that houses the Northeastern University Division of Public Safety (NUPD) office, according to a BPD incident report.

Quiznos closes doors

The Quiznos sandwich shop at 263 Huntington Ave., between Symphony Hall and Gainsborough Street closed Nov. 4, eliminating an eating choice near the Northeastern campus.

Northeastern alumnus and Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court justice Roderick Ireland was nominated Nov. 4 for the chief justice position by newly re-elected governor Deval Patrick. Ireland, if appointed, would be the state’s first African-American chief justice.
