The release of the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report over the weekend, sponsored by the United Nations Environmental Programme, confirms our worst nightmares about climate change. It states, in no uncertain terms, that increased heat waves, storms, the acidification of the ocean and sea level rise are, and will continue to be, a devastating reality.
Fossil fuel divestment futile

Fossil fuel divestment futile

November 6, 2014
s an environmental science student, I am constantly reminded by my peers in DivestNU of their intent to force Northeastern to divest endowment funds invested in fossil fuel companies and research. They claim that divestment will allow Northeastern to be a “leader in social change for an ethical and just cause,” similar to divestment movements against apartheid South Africa in the 1980s.

Ebola hysteria carries weight

November 6, 2014
Ebola hysteria has swept across the nation. It has taken over our news stations and papers, and is consuming the time of our president and politicians. Dominating social media and kitchen table conversation, it has Americans panicking at the thought of an outbreak.

I regret to inform you that a fundamental change in the leadership at The Huntington News has been made following the publishing of incorrect information regarding the closing of the Center for Labor Market Studies. The article, which was published in the Oct. 9 issue of The News, was compiled by a reporter after poor choices were made in regards to where information was gathered. Last April, over 200 schoolgirls were abducted in Nigeria by Islamist militant group, Boko Haram. The group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, said in a video he released last May that Allah told him to sell the girls into marriage, believing they should be wed rather than educated.

Northeastern students are easily connected to the city via the Green and Orange Lines and bus routes. We use the MBTA for professional pursuits, for classes and to enjoy the culture of Boston – at a price. A co-op student will spend $450 on monthly passes over six months. Going downtown once a weekend costs $20 monthly. One round-trip alone costs $5.

Column: Goodbye Columbus Day

Column: Goodbye Columbus Day

October 23, 2014
As many cities around the country observed Columbus Day last Monday, Seattle was celebrating the unanimous decision to instate Indigenous Peoples’ Day in its place. Anyone who experienced third grade US curriculum can tell you that Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. It’s the events that followed this that have been falsely represented in American culture, and the renaming of Columbus Day is one of the actions cities are taking to acknowledge the treatment of native people by the famous European explorer.

Letter: Gerrymandering, an issue in american politics

October 23, 2014
I am confident that if I said that the current US Congress was one of the most dysfunctional that our generation has seen, I would not see much disagreement. It’s for this reason that a lot of people I talk to wave discussions off with a shrug and a “that’s politics.” The truth of the matter is that it doesn’t have to be this way.

New view on psychedelics

LSD and its cohorts haven’t left the forefront of American and world interest yet. New groups are dedicated to undoing the lies that many have spread about the alleged dangers and are aiming at a new purpose: medication.
