Facebook: social network and global news source

Facebook: social network and global news source

September 25, 2014
The Web is an unregulated, globally distributed network with each user forging and enforcing their own rules. As a result, the Internet and all of its mediums have become another mode by which anyone can exercise their First Amendment right. Facebook is a prime example of the interconnectivity of the web and an outlet to exercise the country’s most valued freedom. Users can post just about anything, including, as we all have seen, violent content.

Letter: To northeastern freshman, your time will come soon

Dear Northeastern freshmen, Stop making me feel so old. You walk around in your “Class of 2014” t-shirts and you make me realize, “I didn’t even go to high school with you.” You were in eighth grade, more concerned with dances and hanging at the mall until your mom could pick you up than you were with where you would be attending college. I was throwing a cap in the air looking ahead to Boston.

Over the summer my Facebook newsfeed changed drastically. Gone were videos of cute Husky puppies. So long to photo albums of my friends traveling the world. Instead, my Facebook was covered with people dumping ice water on themselves for the ice bucket challenge. Dozens of videos plastered my laptop screen, showing a person announcing a 24-hour deadline for their nominees to pour a bucket of water over their heads
Singing, songwriting, two very different vocations

Singing, songwriting, two very different vocations

Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson are widely regarded as two of the greatest artists in the history of music: Presley as the king of rock-n-roll and Jackson the king of pop. Both had amazing voices that compelled you to sing along and get up on your feet to dance. However, there is something significantly different between the two artists, something that has been the topic of debate in the music industry for years: Jackson was known for writing his own songs, while Presley was known for passing other songwriters’ work as his own.

Letter: Living cost too high

Letter: Living cost too high

One thing that not just Northeastern University students, but all residents of Boston can agree on is that the cost of housing in this city is entirely too high. I never really noticed it until I moved into my apartment at the beginning of the semester.
Lack of diversity on screen

Lack of diversity on screen

America prides itself on being a country made up of immigrants, being diverse and welcoming of diversity, but as racially diverse as the country may be, and becoming more so every year, America lacks integration. In a country consumed by the media, there is no place this is more evident than in the film industry.
Column: Better when shared

Column: Better when shared

Call us late bloomers, but I think millennials are finally learning to share. We are doing it by not only taking part in but also embodying the ideals of the “sharing economy,” a socio-economic system constructed around the sharing of resources. Also known as “collaborative consumption” or the “peer economy,” the sharing economy uses technology to enable people to access items or services through their peers, rather than large companies.

You wake up at six to get ready for the day. You have to be at work by nine. You quickly shower, get dressed, make your breakfast, pack lunch and head out the door for work. Eight hours later, five o’clock finally comes and with it, the end of your work day. You head home and...

Column: Moscow no longer “loving it”

September 4, 2014

By Juliana McLeod Seven weeks ago, I was slurping a 100 Ruble ice cream cone under a large, red umbrella, inscribed with “макдоналдс.” I did not consider the mouthful of pure sugar a momentous moment, but after reading a recent article, it is time I think otherwise. In...
