Letter: Concussion tests necessary for all sports

October 1, 2014
Student athletes incur a multitude of injuries during a season. One of the most serious of injuries that athletes can have is a concussion. In any sport, there is a chance to get a concussion, but the chance increases nine fold in sports such as rugby or football. With a concussion, athletes may not realize that they are injured, or they may not want to be taken off the field, which makes it very difficult to treat.

On Sept. 19, a man scaled the White House fence before jumping over it and running toward the residence. It was not until he made it inside that security was able to stop him. The incident has made headlines of The New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and more, as the breach questions the capabilities of the Secret Service.

If you aren’t familiar with the stereotype, here is your average depiction of a millennial college student: Lazy, entitled, self-obsessed, delayed in everything and, apparently, unable to read anything not in list form. And while we’ve all been those things from time to time – I’ve probably been all of them today, and it’s not even noon – the indolent “me, me, me” attitude doesn’t quite match up with the generational experience I’ve witnessed, or more specifically, the college experience.

The Web is an unregulated, globally distributed network with each user forging and enforcing their own rules. As a result, the Internet and all of its mediums have become another mode by which anyone can exercise their First Amendment right. Users can post just about anything, including, as we all have seen, violent content.

Letter: To northeastern freshman, your time will come soon

Dear Northeastern freshmen, Stop making me feel so old. You walk around in your “Class of 2014” t-shirts and you make me realize, “I didn’t even go to high school with you.” You were in eighth grade, more concerned with dances and hanging at the mall until your mom could pick you up than you were with where you would be attending college. I was throwing a cap in the air looking ahead to Boston.

Over the summer my Facebook newsfeed changed drastically. Gone were videos of cute Husky puppies. So long to photo albums of my friends traveling the world. Instead, my Facebook was covered with people dumping ice water on themselves for the ice bucket challenge. Dozens of videos plastered my laptop screen, showing a person announcing a 24-hour deadline for their nominees to pour a bucket of water over their heads
Singing, songwriting, two very different vocations

Singing, songwriting, two very different vocations

Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson are widely regarded as two of the greatest artists in the history of music: Presley as the king of rock-n-roll and Jackson the king of pop. Both had amazing voices that compelled you to sing along and get up on your feet to dance. However, there is something significantly different between the two artists, something that has been the topic of debate in the music industry for years: Jackson was known for writing his own songs, while Presley was known for passing other songwriters’ work as his own.
