Letter: An ode to NU Publications

September 19, 2013
I’d like to take this opportunity to take my hat off to every Northeastern student publication.

Column: A call to action

September 19, 2013
There has to be a call to action amongst college students, especially those of minority descent, to groom the upcoming generation of minorities for college.

Column: An immigrant’s dream

September 12, 2013
The children believed that by coming to America their dreams of becoming doctors, pilots, teachers, pastors or professional athletes would come true. They thought this was truly the promised land of the “American dream.” I am in no way saying that America would have less opportunities for these children than Zambia, but their image of stepping off a plane into a land without poverty is far from reality.

Editorial: Students should participate in mayoral election

August 15, 2013
For the first time in 20 years, Boston in is the midst of a competitive mayoral campaign. The incumbent of those last 20 years, Mayor Thomas M. Menino, is retiring, leaving a field of twelve candidates with no clear front runner. While at first glance some of the big issues being discussed, like the charter school cap and neighborhood redevelopment, may seem of little importance to Northeastern students. But the outcome of this campaign will resonate for at least the next four – if not 20 – years. Anyone who has a morsel of an interest in the well being of the city would be a fool not to tune in.

Column: Don’t let violence ruin city living

August 15, 2013
With all the news regarding the James “Whitey” Bulger trial and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s day in court, violence has been on the forefront of Boston news this summer. It seems like every other week, Boston has been plagued with a new, high-profile shooting or sexual assault.

Editorial: Rolling Stone deserves place in NU bookstore

August 1, 2013
Tsarnaev presents an important case study in understanding why people like him chose to do the things they do. As tempting as it is, it would be highly irresponsible to ignore him. By removing the magazine from the bookstore, Northeastern is doing just this. For a profit-making entity like CVS to do this is one thing, but for an academic institution to do this is simply shameful.

Column: Racial profiling is alive and well

August 1, 2013
Observing differences in cultures and customs is important in society. Being able to respect those differences is a key component of peaceful coexistence. It would be wrong to ignore our differences. However, when this acknowledgement includes stereotypes a larger issue begins to take shape.

Column: Taking the fun out of the automobile

July 18, 2013
Cars today are digital robots that only exist to get the driver from A to B. There’s no trial, no struggle, no excitement. There’s no room for any bond and certainly no reason to go for a drive just to drive. They’re all business, which is no fun.

Editorial: Statistics support the Northeastern model

July 18, 2013
If there is one thing that truly sets Northeastern apart from other schools, it is probably the university’s storied co-op program. For nearly the entirety of the school’s history, this innovative focus on experiential learning has come to define Northeastern, and foster countless opportunities for its students. Now, a new study is providing empirical support for giving student paid job experience.

Editorial: hike in student loan interest rates will cause a lot of damage

July 4, 2013
At this point, it is easy to ignore Congress’s chronic paralysis and subsequent failure to address any of the serious issues affecting the United States. Congress has been unable to adequately govern for years now, and thus it is easy to forget that there are real consequences to the bitterly divided legislature’s inaction. But for students at Northeastern and across the country, it will be difficult to ignore Congress’s recent failure to prevent student loan rates from doubling.

Column: Whistleblower should own up

July 4, 2013
Eight days after he arrived at Moscow Airport, National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden broke silence on Monday with a series of statements directed at the Obama administration.

Editorial: NU protest policy is harmful

June 20, 2013
As a self-described “global leader,” Northeastern should encourage this sort of behavior from students, not try to stop it. Part of global leadership is taking charge against injustice. The students in SJP were taking charge against their sense of injustice; Huskies for Israel should be free – as they have in the past – to do the same thing, as for all other such groups.
