Finance Board should be open to public

September 29, 2010

When given the opportunity, governments should uphold transparent procedures, especially when dealing with students’ money. I don’t agree with Ryan Fox’s decision to operate the Student Government Association’s (SGA) Finance Board, formerly named the Budget Review...

Letter to the Editor: Fox should defer to policy of transparency

September 29, 2010

In his infinite wisdom, Student Body President Ryan Fox has decided to close Finance Board meetings to the public. This means that unless you’re a member of the exclusive Student Government Association (SGA) Cash Club, you’ll have no say in how your Student Activity Fee (SAF)...

Dynamics will change by keeping sophmores on campus

September 29, 2010
University officials announced this week that starting with the class of 2016, students will be required to live on campus for both freshman and sophomore year. Previously, students were only required to live on campus for their first year. Also part of the new rule is that freshman and sophomores will be required to live in LLCs.

Services for students on co-op leave much to be desired

September 22, 2010
Co-op: A word in the vocabulary of every Northeastern student. The rotation of school and real world experience is the reason that many students choose this university. It is also one of the reasons our school is known across the country.

A look on the new political generation

September 22, 2010
We’ve heard it before, over and over. Our parents complaining about how our generation does nothing: how we are always glued to televisions, video games, iPhones, iPods, Blackberrys, etc. Some parents even go so far as to say that we don’t have voices or passions. But I think they’re wrong.

An unlikely solution to national security

September 15, 2010
The proposed Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero has taken over the media in recent weeks, inciting opposition and support from some of the most surprising groups imaginable. There are families of Sept. 11 victims supporting the project while many Muslims are outlining reasons why the center, nicknamed Park51, should not exist so close to Ground Zero.

Being back on campus feels like home

September 15, 2010
New class schedules. New professors. New housing assignments. New roommates. New faces on campus. A fresh start. There’s something re-energizing about the start of a new school year. A kind of giddy excitement that makes moving back to Northeastern an enjoyable experience.

Editorial: NU P.L.E.D.G.E. a quick fix to a bigger problem

September 15, 2010
Northeastern faced exceptional opposition over the last several years to expansion and student overflow in surrounding communities like Mission Hill, Roxbury and Fenway. Mission Hill residents have recently expressed their anger at Northeastern University for failing to follow through with building two new residence halls that would help bring students back to campus.

BostoNU: September, a time for change and chances

September 8, 2010
September is a roller coaster of a month, especially if you’re a freshman. You not only say goodbye to summer, but to everything back home that’s familiar. It means exciting things too, of course – a new city, new friends and being on your own. Originally, I was filled with the latter emotion in the months leading up to my freshman year. Coming from a small town in upstate New York, I couldn’t wait to get to Boston. I love where I come from, but I felt destined for bigger things.

Editorial: Taking the “No” out of Northeastern

August 17, 2010
Without a doubt, Northeastern students are able to do some amazing things. Few other universities can boast having students learning on every continent. Many undergraduates working in world-class laboratories and institutions around the globe. However, much of what students do is a result of their own determination, dedication and perseverance. Northeastern may have had a marginal role in their success, but, in some cases, it has made things more difficult for them. While some students are able to accomplish their academic and personal goals within the structure of the university, Northeastern really needs to find what it’s missing out on – a lot of good ideas that never get a second glance.
