Political ads attacking opponents are too much

October 26, 2010
It is anything but fun when commercials continually pound my brain with the best cleaning product to relieve pet odors, the most sturdy paper towel brand (that can beat any test, really) or the healthiest cereal that can lower anyone’s cholesterol.

No solution for off campus housing problems

October 26, 2010
Since I’ve been back on campus this semester, I’ve heard and read a lot about the off-campus housing situation here at Northeastern. It seems like every time I pick up this paper there’s another article about students being bad neighbors on Mission Hill or the pros and cons of living on campus as opposed to off. These issues pop up every fall and we, once again, are wasting our energy trying to ameliorate the problems.

Barriers keep students from traveling abroad

October 21, 2010
Last week, the Northeastern Office of Study Abroad Programs posted details on the Dialogue of Civilizations Web site for the upcoming summer semesters. Dialogues are just one of the many study abroad opportunities offered here, making the possibilities of intertwining co-op, classes and study abroad nearly endless.

Alcohol and drug policy not realistic in college

October 21, 2010
During freshmen and transfer orientations, students have to listen to a speech from staff members in the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (OSCCR). They discuss the procedures and guidelines for alcohol and drug abuse on campus and what to do if these abuses occur. While it is in fact an important speech, students are left with redundant information about how dangerous drugs can be.

Northeastern too obsessed with the numbers

October 21, 2010
I have spent the last four years of my life at this university trying to figure out what’s been driving undergraduates’ animosity toward our administration.

Students should give back to community

October 13, 2010

It’s always comforting to return to my rural hometown of Holcomb during Columbus Day weekend and remember that autumn actually exists. Although trees line Huntington Avenue and colorful mums sprout around campus, living in Boston makes it difficult to recognize the beauty of...

State of the University doesn’t address the issues

October 13, 2010
President Joseph Aoun summed up his State of the University in a few words on Wednesday: “The university is in great shape.” This can’t be disputed – Northeastern is more diverse and competitive than ever, and initiatives announced by Aoun today will certainly continue this trend. However, Aoun failed to mention any real areas of improvement that Northeastern needs to address.

Off-campus housing can be annoying

October 6, 2010
In a city with endless apartment options, at some point during their college career, Northeastern students are usually forced to decide between living on campus or venturing off with a group of friends. Having your own place sounds great and so is the freedom it offers. Usually you will have your own room and can have friends over without signing them in. It’s easy to think up positives to living off campus, but what are the negatives?

Assessing safety around Northeastern

October 6, 2010
Recent reports on the safety of the Northeastern University campus and surrounding areas seem to contradict each other. The Daily Beast ranked Northeastern the 30th most dangerous college in America in their second annual survey of college campuses, according to a Sept. 30 article by The News.
