Letter: Students should appreciate Matthews Arena

Almost every day I walk down Gainsborough Street, crossing St. Botolph Street before finally making my way to Huntington Avenue. Almost everyday I walk past Matthews Arena. But not everyday do I really take the time to appreciate the historic facility. Matthews Arena, formerly known as Boston Arena, is the original home of the Boston Celtics.

Editorial: Eliminating activities periods will ultimately benefit students

In an article last week, The News reported on a proposed plan that will create 226 new sections for classes by eliminating activities periods Wednesdays and Thursdays. This is ultimately meant to benefit students and the entire Northeastern community. Simply put, there are not enough classrooms available to meet student demand for classes and sections.

A single room recently opened up in my suite, so I asked for it to be transferred to me. Spring housing assignments recently came out, and I found out some random senior (who I am pretty sure isn’t guaranteed housing) ended up with it.

Editorial: As a democracy, SGA must be more transparent for students

The News reported on Sept. 23 on the decision made by the Student Government Association (SGA) to no longer allow reporters from The News into Finance Board meetings. (Finance Board was previously known as the Budget Review Committee, or BRC). Board members justified this decision by saying that they deal with sensitive material in meetings, and all the numbers would be posted online after meetings for the entire student body to see.

Column: YMCA dorms will benefit students, community

Northeastern recently struck a deal to create more dormitories for students seeking on campus housing. The university is leasing space from Phoenix Property Co., which is purchasing wings of the YMCA to build dorms and apartments for students. I believe this new purchase is beneficial to Northeastern because of the housing wait list for many incoming students.

Editorial: NU should expand gender-neutral housing

The option of living in gender neutral housing has been available to Huskies since 2009. At that point, International Village became the only option on campus should students want to cohabitate with members of the opposite sex. Only about 64 students are currently living in gender neutral housing (up 49 beds from last year).

Column: SGA Facebook page a good way to reach students

I commend the Student Government Association (SGA), President Ryan Fox and other members of the organization for recently creating a Facebook page devoted to recognizing students’ ideas for ways to improve life as Huskies. With the page’s motto, “It’s your money, tell us how you want to see it spent on and around campus,” SGA members have initiated a more direct way to communicate with students and to ease the average Husky’s questions and concerns.

Many new technologies have rolled out in recent weeks at the behest of Student Government Association (SGA). The new print system, while at first confusing, actually seems to be streamlining the print process (although I don’t like my pages being associated with a monetary value).
