Letter: The Iranian threat

March 27, 2013
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has time and again used harsh rhetoric in contempt of Israel’s place in the world. In May 2011, Ahmadinejad compared the creation of Israel to the spread of cancer throughout the body, saying that this “regime infects any region” and “must be removed from the body.” It's quite clear what he wants. Ahmadinejad is specifically calling for the genocidal ousting of the State of Israel. Such hate speech cannot be tolerated by anyone.

Letter: Corrado and Shaw have proven record of leadership

March 27, 2013
I have been a member of the Student Government Association (SGA) for the past four years, and on the Executive Board for two terms in the roles of Executive Vice President (EVP) and Vice President for Student Services. Therefore, I have an understanding of how SGA currently operates as well as what it takes to successfully serve the student body. Based on my experiences both in and outside of SGA, I firmly believe that Mary Corrado and Zach Shaw are the best candidates to serve in these roles for the upcoming year.

Editorial: ‘E-hail’ apps good for city consumers

March 20, 2013
Last week, Boston Cab Dispatch, one of the city’s largest taxi companies, filed a lawsuit against the makers of the smartphone app Uber, claiming it was essentially operating a livery service beyond city regulations, creating unfair competition. This is not the first legal hurdle Uber has faced; the city of Cambridge has openly battled with the company, suing to overturn a state ruling last summer that approved of the app’s use of GPS technology to track fares. Similar battles have been taking place across the nation.

Column: My 20 dollars and 13 cents

March 20, 2013
One of the most valuable lessons I learned in journalism school at Northeastern is never to ignore a phone call. It could be a source reaching out to me or an editor with a job offer or any number of other things that will keep my career rolling forward. But last night when I got two calls back-to-back from 617-373-3760, a number I didn’t have programmed into my phone, I let it ring.

Letter: Debunking the myths of the senior gift

March 20, 2013
Unlike that of other colleges and universities, the goal of the Northeastern Senior Gift Drive is not to raise funds to erect a new monument, statue or plaque on campus to commemorate the class of 2013. At Northeastern, we are encouraged to give to what we love, whether that’s our student organization, fraternity/sorority, club sport, etc. – we choose!

Editorial: Student groups should work together on Israel-Palestine conflict

March 13, 2013
This week, the Northeastern chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) is hosting Israeli Apartheid Week on campus. In recent years, few issues have been as divisive on campus as the Israel-Palestine conflict. On each side of the issue is a very active student group – SJP, and Huskies for Israel. Members of both of these groups should be commended for their civic engagement and for pursuing their sense of justice, but both groups could better further their goals and improve Northeastern’s community by working together instead of against each other.

Column: The bare minimum

March 13, 2013
As a college student (and a journalist in general), the minimum wage is something that I am very familiar with. I have worked many minimum wage jobs, mostly in the restaurant industry, where the minimum wage for waitstaff lingers somewhere around $2.60 per hour. Don’t worry, I don’t spend it all in one place.

Letter: Apartheid evident in Israel

March 13, 2013
For the 2.6 million Palestinians who live in the West Bank, "apartheid" is not just some abstract concept, a word only seen in history books. Apartheid is the way things are, a bitter fact of life they must live through every day. This is why we have Israeli Apartheid Week, to raise awareness of their plight, so that it may someday end.

Letter: ‘Israeli Apartheid Week’ unfounded

March 13, 2013
In early March, students from college campuses all across the country, including Northeastern, will join together as part of “Israeli Apartheid Week.” The alleged purpose of this event is "to educate people about the nature of Israel as an apartheid system and to build Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns” against the country. In America, we all have freedom of speech under the First Amendment to the Constitution. However, this freedom should not be used to spread incitement and hate through lies and a demonization campaign. The accusation that Israel is an apartheid state is false.
