Die Antwoord: Certifiably insane or creative pioneers?

June 18, 2014
An underground mine. An abandoned gas station. The woods. These are the places that seem most befitting to South African rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, who are known for pushing boundaries in the musical world and calling into question the definition of “taste.” But despite their questionable reputation, the group’s June 7 show at the House of Blues was packed full.

Review: “22 Jump Street” is the sequel that knows it’s a sequel

June 18, 2014
Who would’ve thought a sequel to a comedy remake of a ‘90s cop drama would kill at the box office? But it seems anything goes now in Hollywood, as “22 Jump Street” opened last weekend, grossing an estimated $60 million. Neither the Stanley Cup nor the World Cup kept people away, and the sequel had the second-highest grossing opening weekend for an R-rated comedy (just behind “Hangover II”).

For my entire life up until this point, summer break was it. It was the motivation for finishing school and working hard and pushing through exams. Three more weeks, one more week, two days, and finally, summer break. Three months that included trips to the beach, the lake and the river, new friends, summer loves and most importantly: freedom.

Boston-based Tales of Olde plays hometown show, releases debut EP

May 21, 2014
Part Mumford and Sons, part Black Keys, Boston-based group Tales of Olde is hitting their hometown music scene with a combination of classic folk style and soulful vocals, infused with grungier hard-driving beats and electric riffs. Made up of Lucas Cortazio on lead vocals and guitar, Evelyn Cortazio on vocals, Ellen Story on fiddle, Drew Story on guitar, Jeff Kinsey on bass and Al Cleveland on drums, the band formed in early 2013. They graduated from playing for a few friends in a living room to performing at local venues like The Middle East and PA’s Lounge, before opening a sold-out show for The Ballroom Thieves at The Sinclair. They released their first single “This Place” in October 2013 and are now releasing their debut EP on May 28 with a performance at Great Scott. The Huntington News spoke with lead singer Lucas Cortazio about the band’s experiences, sound and what they hope to achieve.

Hooded eyes, hunchbacks, and frantic fingers become of the passengers like an urban legend of metamorphosis. They warm the seats with the labor of the work they don’t care for. No one can muster the will to make any feasible eye contact except perhaps a quick aversion when elbows have been jostled or bags bumped into. Weariness and apathy sit heavy on shoulders like boulders. The doors shut mechanically, unaware of the limb it almost snapped or the nose of the person they rejected from boarding. This is what a typical ride on a subway or train is like, but what if it didn’t have to be this way?
