Northeastern teams with You Can Play movement

“If you can play, you can play.” It may sound like a straightforward sentence, but for the Northeastern Athletics department and the dozens of other sports organizations who have joined the You Can Play Project in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) athletes, those words hold a lot of meaning.

The Northeastern men’s freshman eight won the bronze medal at the 2012 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships in Camden, N.J., last weekend, marking the first time since 1994 that the freshman eight has won a medal.

NU cross country and track & field coach Hart retires

Northeastern University Athletic Director Peter Roby announced last week that cross country and champion track and field head coach Sherman Hart has retired, ending a 24-year coaching career with the university. The men’s and women’s track and field teams won 28 conference championships under Hart.

Former women’s soccer stand-out Napoli signs with pro team

Veronica Napoli has left her mark on Northeastern, ending her senior season as the women’s soccer program’s all-time leading scorer – but her success hasn’t stopped there. In April, the forward signed with the Boston Breakers of the newly formed Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPSL) Elite.

Men’s and women’s track finish 12th, 13th at New England Championship

CAA structure shaken up after Old Dominion, Virginia Commonwealth announce plans to leave conference

Two Colonial Athletic Association universities and Northeastern rivals – Virginia Commonwealth University and Old Dominion University – announced plans last week to pull out of the CAA for more competitive conferences. VCU said May 15 it will leave the CAA for the Atlantic 10 effective July 1, and ODU said May 17 it will join Conference USA for the 2013-14 season. In early April, Georgia State University started this trend when it announced it had accepted an invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference for the 2013-14 season.
