From the men’s team, freshman Eric Jenkins is running in both the 1,500-meter run and the 5,000-meter run, senior Jonathon Hall is competing in the 400-meter hurdles and senior Patrick Jablonski is throwing both the shot put and the discus. Junior Jessica Barton also qualified to compete in the 5,000-meter run but has to sit out due to an injury.

Column: Is better worse?

May 26, 2011
If I hear one more person talk about how awesome it is that Dallas Maverick J.J. Barea was once a Northeastern student, I am going to commit seppuku out of rage and annoyance. Now, many of you probably do not know what seppuku is. Also known as hara-kiri, it was a form of ritual suicide that samurai performed once they were either defeated or shamed. The ritual itself involves the victim stabbing himself in the stomach with a short sword and moving the blade from left to right in a slicing motion, followed by an assistant removing the victims head with a sword.

POTW: Heather Crocker

May 26, 2011
Going into the last meet of the season, senior Heather Crocker approached the end of her throwing career for the womens’ track & field team. And what better way to go out than with a school record. Crocker threw the javelin 142 feet, 8 inches at the 2011 New England Championship meet to break the school record and win the event – the first Husky to ever win this event at the New England Championship meet. Her performance earned her Huntington News Player of the Week honors.

Sports column: Big shoes to fill

May 12, 2011
When fans fill an Arena, their cheers, chants, gasps and roars motivate our sports teams to go beyond their natural abilities to achieve greatness. Northeastern has deeply loyal fans. Despite the fact we are not really a “sports school,” we can pack Matthews arena to the brim when the need arises and the DogHouse is undoubtedly one of the greatest student sections in college hockey.

Baseball:Huskies chance at comeback washed by weather

May 5, 2011
In a season that has seen far more losses than wins, it seems like almost every team the Huskies have faced have stifled their late inning comeback attempts. Against UMass Amherst Wednesday, it was the rain that did the stifling. The Minutemen carried a 3-2 lead after a third inning rally and when the Huskies tried to make another nail-biting comeback, the game was called by umpires at around 4:15 PM.

Men’s Hockey: Cronin upset with Reid’s early exit to Cali

April 21, 2011
Northeastern freshman standout Brodie Reid has left the university and signed a professional contract with the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League. And according to Huskies head coach Greg Cronin, that was a big mistake. “I told him right to his face he can’t play in the NHL and he can’t play in the top two lines of the American [Hockey] League,” Cronin said.

Column: Gone, Brodie gone

Freshman forward Brodie Reid reportedly received a “maximum contract” for a player of his age from the San Jose Sharks, a team that also has the rights to three other Huskies: sophomore forwards Justin and Drew Daniels and freshman Cody Ferriero.
