Men’s track: Hall to run for Ireland

To compete on a national stage is a dream come true for any athlete. Just ask James Hall, a member of the track and field team. This dream will soon become a reality, when he travels to Tullamore, Ireland this summer to compete in the Irish Junior National Championships’ hammer throw event.

Outdoor track: Pitts captures first victory

On the women’s side, freshman Ashlee Pitts experienced her first collegiate victory in the 100-meter dash, which she ran in 12.69. She said winning her first event in college was very exciting.

Men and Women’s Crew: NU faces tough competition at the Charles

The Huskies raced against Boston University and University of Louisville in the first round of the Charles River Challenge Saturday, taking home the top spots in the first and third varsity eight races and another first place in the varsity four race. The NU second varsity eight came in a tough third place in their race.

Player of the Week: Patrick Jablonski

Senior thrower Patrick Jablonski won both the shot put and the discus events this weekend at the track and field team’s final home meet of the season. He also qualified for the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) championship meet for both events. His performance earned him Huntington News Player of the Week honors.

Baseball: Huskies turn on jets, cruise to four straight

Going into Friday with a 5-20 record (1-8 Colonial Athletic Association), the Huskies swept Hofstra University at home and then traveled to Harvard, where they squeaked out a 6-5 win. The wins put the Huskies at 9-20 on the year and 4-8 in CAA play.

Outdoor track: Barrett runs third best time in NU history

Shapiro ran the 100-meter dash in 11:08 for the win and freshman teammate Eric Jenkins was also victorious in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:47.99. Jenkins’ time was the fastest time recorded by a Husky since 1997.

Club Running: Runners take home top spot

“Our sport is every other sport’s punishment.” This motto is what goes through the mind of Erika Da Costa, a freshman on Northeastern’s club running team, every time she goes on one of her six-mile runs through Boston, trekking across the Charles River into Cambridge and heading to a bridge that will bring her back around to the grass outside the Cabot Center.

Men’s Rowing: NU falls to BU, loses Artlett Cup

BU was able to take the advantage early, taking a four-seat lead over the first quarter of the 2000-meter Charles River course. The Terriers’ crescendo widened its distance just after passing under the Massachusetts Avenue bridge, a lead they were able to build upon until Northeastern got its rhythm back under control.

Player of the week: Brandon McNelis

Senior Brandon McNelis pitched a three-hit shutout last Sunday for the win against Hofstra University. He walked one batter and struck out seven, notching his first complete game and second career win. His performance earned him Huntington News Player of the Week honors. “He pitches better every time he is out on the mound and last time was his best yet,” head coach Neil McPhee said. “[McNelis] pitched an extraordinary game.”

For spring break, I visited a friend in Durham, N.C. As a part of my visit, I had the good fortune to attend a Duke University basketball game, which was a phenomenal experience. A night at the famed Cameron Indoor stadium is a unique sports experience that only a few thousand fans get to enjoy on a nightly basis. Entry into the arena is a coveted prize, sometimes requiring days (or, if it’s the game against UNC, upwards of a month) of camping outside the arena to attain.

Baseball: Huskies lose four straight

The metaphorical snowball keeps getting bigger and bigger. After going 2-2 last week, the baseball team found itself back to its early season ways, dropping four straight contests this week. The losing streak, which stood at three, increased to four when the Huskies registered a loss at home Wednesday afternoon against Rhode Island. The defeat came at a time when the Huskies desperately needed a win. Unfortunately, the Huskies’ efforts were not enough, as the Rams stifled the late-surging Huskies, ending the game with a 7-6 loss.

Men’s hockey: Thiessen finds success in AHL

Two years and four days ago, Northeastern’s stand-out goaltender Brad Thiessen signed a two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins, cutting his collegiate career short to play professionally. After posting a school record 25 wins in the 2008-09 season and guiding the Huskies to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 15 years, Thiessen suited up for the Pens’ minor-league affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
