Column: Roby shines on OTL, proves point

On Monday Northeastern athletics saw recognition on two major television networks. In the afternoon, athletics director Peter Roby was a guest on ESPN’s Outside The Lines (OTL), and a few hours later, during CBS’ NCAA championship broadcast, the network flashed back to remind fans and alumni of an unfortunate Husky loss to Virginia Commonwealth in the 1984 tournament.

Player of the Week: Jon Leroux

Sophomore catcher Jon Leroux knocked in three runs and belted a home run last weekend in a series against the Towson Tigers. This brought his total to 12 runs batted in on the season, the second-best mark on the team. His performance earned him Huntington News Player of the Week honors. “I was seeing the ball better than the previous weeks,” Leroux said. “This season has been all right for me, but it’s better as of two weeks ago. I just think day-to-day like every game.”

Baseball: Huskies take wins from Richmond, BC

After Brown University spoiled the baseball team’s home debut at a newly-renovated Friedman Diamond, the Huskies chalked their first home win, defeating Boston College 2-1 Tuesday.

Track & Field: Athletes shine in warm weather at invitational

Three members of the women’s track & field team qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championships at the Florida State Invitational last weekend. Sophomore Jillena DeCarteret received the only victory in the women’s pole vault, clearing 13 feet, 3.75 inches to tie for the school record, while qualifying for the ECAC championship. She matched Laura Chmielewski’s school record, which was set May 8, 2004.

Player of the Week: Jessica Barton

Senior Jessica Barton broke the school record for the 5,000-meter run by almost nine seconds at the Stanford Invitational meet Friday, March 25 while qualifying for the NCAA championship meet. Her performance earned her Huntington News Player of the Week honors.

Five years ago, George Mason's surge through the NCAA men's basketball tournament became the textbook definition for mid-major success in an era of power conference domination. By now you know of Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) shocking march from a First Four play-in game to the Final Four in Houston. The irony is that, much like Mason in 2006, VCU entered the tournament having received an at-large bid and the No. 11 seed in its region.

The club wrestling team doesn’t fill Matthews Arena with screaming fans. But it can, unlike the men’s hockey or basketball team, boast three all-Americans, including one national champion and one runner-up, in the team’s best year since it began in the early 2000s.

Every opposing coach that has come into Matthews Arena this season has offered nothing but praise for Northeastern’s top line of seniors Wade MacLeod, Tyler McNeely and Steve Silva. The forwards finished the year as the Huskies’ top three scorers and point-getters, accounting for nearly half (46 of 108) of the team’s goals. Head coach Greg Cronin has big skates to fill for next year’s squad.

Top-seeded Boston College went 3-for-6 on power play opportunities and survived a wild finish Friday night, ending the sixth-seeded Huskies’ season with a 5-4 win in front of 16,000 people at the TD Garden.

Club Tennis: Program givesback to the community

The club tennis team was recognized as the New England Team of the Year by the United States Tennis Association’s Tennis on Campus organization for the second time in two years. The team was also recognized as an honorable mention for the national team of the year.

Outdoor Track and Field: Hall, Taback shine in first outdoor meet

Freshman James Hall threw the hammer 179 feet, 8 inches for the win, followed by teammates senior Alex Iannetta and freshman Max Milder who finished second and fourth, respectively. Iannetta threw the hammer 176 feet, 4 inches and Milder 170 feet, 10 inches.
