Player of the Week: Dana Schleif

December 2, 2010
In just her first semester with the swimming & diving team, freshman Dana Schleif has written herself into the school’s record books. At the Terrier Invitational Nov. 19-21, Schleif set records in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke and helped the Huskies to a second-place finish in the tournament. Her efforts have earned her Huntington News Player of the Week honors.

Column: Game time at the Garden

Saturday afternoon, the men’s basketball team will be centerstage when it competes in the Boston Tip-Off Classic at the TD Garden. This is the first time NU is playing basketball at the Garden since the 1972-73 season, when the Huskies faced Harvard in the now-defunct Basketball Beanpot Tournament. The men’s hockey team will also play at the Garden later this year, when they’ll of course be in the annual Beanpot tournament on the first two Mondays in February.

Women’s Hockey: Rollercoaster journey brings Rylan to NU

Dani Rylan is not your average Division I women’s hockey player. Not only is she a graduate student, but she is also advancing her career as a sports journalist. At 23, Rylan is the oldest player on the team. She is also the only graduate student on the team and a first-year player for the Huskies.

"I am writing to inform you that the University’s senior administration, president, and Board of Trustees have accepted my recommendation to discontinue Northeastern’s intercollegiate football program. Last night I shared the news with our players and staff. The decision was a difficult one, made all the more difficult because of the respect and admiration I have for our coaches and players. Despite my personal feelings toward them, I am convinced that this decision is in the best interest of the university."

Men’s Hockey: Slumping Huskies score five goals, snap losing streak

You could say the men’s hockey team was just due. The Huskies had gone four weeks without picking up a victory. They hadn’t won at Matthews Arena in 274 days, since they beat Boston College, 3-2, for their final victory of last season March 6. And they were scheduled to face Providence this past Homecoming Weekend, a team that hadn’t lost in six straight games.

Men’s Basketball: Siena hands Huskies first loss

With four freshmen and five sophomores, the men’s basketball team’s lacks playing experience and that contributed to the Huskies’ 84-68 home loss to Siena Saturday, head coach Bill Coen said. “In the first two games we didn’t show any ill effects from being inexperienced and today I thought we showed a bunch,” Coen said. “Sometimes on days like this it’s a tough pill to swallow, but you have to take your medicine and just get better.

Women’s Hockey: MacSorely notches first career hat trick

Freshman forward Katie MacSorely continued her successful rookie campaign Sunday as she recorded her first career hat trick in the women’s hockey team’s 5-1 victory over Providence College. “It felt amazing,” MacSorely said after the game Sunday. “I’ve gotten two goals before but you don’t think the third one is ever going to come. I don’t know, it just felt great.”

Women’s Basketball: Huskies take third at Hawkeye Challenge

The women’s basketball team beat Northern Colorado University 61-53 Sunday to take third-place in the Hawkweye Challenge, which was held in Iowa City, Iowa and snapped a three-game losing streak. Head coach Daynia La-Force Mann said the win came from executing a good game plan.

Swimming & Diving: Freshmen set five school records

After almost two weeks off, the swimming & diving team returned to the pool and earned a second place finish in the Terrier Invitational, at Boston University. Along with the second place finish, three Huskies set five school records. Head coach Roy Coates said he was satisfied with the effort his team put forward in the three-day meet, last weekend.

Player of the Week: Janelle Tucker

Freshman outside hitter Janelle Tucker registered a career- high 22 kills and 23 digs against Delaware for a double-double last Sunday in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship game. Despite the effort, the women’s volleyball lost to Delaware 3-2. James Madison University in the Huskies’ 3-2 win in the semi-finals. Her performance has earned her Huntington News Player of the Week honors.

Player of the Week: Kauri Black

Last season, sophomore forward Kauri Black sat out the first 14 games of the men’s basketball season because of a knee injury. This season, he made his presence felt in the very first game. Black scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds in the Huskies’ 66-64 win against Boston University last Friday. His performance has earned him Huntington News Player of the Week honors.

Men’s Basketball: Allen’s free throw seals win

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Chaisson Allen sat on the Northeastern bench with a look of disgust on his face. The senior captain and guard just picked up his fourth foul with about 17 minutes to go in the men’s basketball team’s Tuesday morning contest at Southern Illinois, putting him one foul away from disqualification.
