STORRS, Conn. – Advancing to its second straight post-season tournament, the men’s basketball team fell just short in their campaign this season, falling 59-57 against Connecticut in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament last night. Northeastern held the lead with less than four minutes to play after junior guard Chaisson Allen converted on a jumper, but was held scoreless over the final 3:05 as UConn finished the game on a 9-2 run.

The women’s basketball season ended this past Friday with a 68-49 loss to Old Dominion in the Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA) tournament quarterfinals. After the game, though, the players’ minds were not focused on the loss but on teammate Brittany Wilson.

Cheering and excitement could be heard in the locker room of the Northeastern club roller hockey team March 7 after capping off their undefeated season with a championship in Feasterville, Pa. The team successfully knocked off every competitor, the season culminating in a 10-4 victory over the University of Scranton in the Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (ECRHA) division 3 regional championship game March 7. A blind eye might not have guessed the team had taken a two-year hiatus from the league and hadn’t played an organized tournament during the time off.

And so the men’s basketball team’s run in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) ended a lot like their run in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament ended. Baptiste Bataille’s desperation three at the buzzer hung in the air, clanged off iron and signified the end of Northeastern’s 2009-2010 season. After the Huskies blew a five-point lead in the final minutes against another set of Huskies – those of Connecticut.

The women’s basketball team looks to put a positive ending on a mediocre season at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament in Harrisonburg, Va., this weekend. The Huskies have won only one game in each of the last two tournaments. If they can put together four wins they will take home the CAA title and get an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

RICHMOND, Va. – For anybody that followed the men’s basketball team this year, it should come as no surprise at how competitive its games at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament were. Unfortunately for the Huskies, they were unable to ride the momentum from a classic double-overtime win in the quarterfinals Saturday and fell to William & Mary in the semifinals Sunday, 47-45.

With four games left in the Hockey East regular season, the Northeastern men’s hockey team sat in fifth place in the conference. Although they had tough opponents on the schedule, a look at the standings with two weekends left to play would show that the team would most likely finish in the top eight, qualifying for the Hockey East playoffs. But after going just 0-3-1 in those last four, the Huskies dropped all the way down to finish ninth, missing the playoffs and ending their season.

The Northeastern women’s hockey team saw its season come to an abrupt end two Saturdays ago, falling to No. 9 University of Connecticut 4-1 in the Hockey East quarter finals. The Huskies (17-9-7, 9-6-6-4) hadn’t lost to UConn (21-9-7, 10-5-6-1) in three previous season matches, winning twice in a shootout and once in regulation. But UConn jumped out to a quick lead, scoring three goals within 1:25 in the first period and held on the rest of the way.

The season came to an end for the swimming & diving team as it placed eighth out of nine teams in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships Feb. 24-27 in Fairfax, Va. The Huskies scored a total of 179 points in the four-day competition. The squad’s performance in the tournament was bittersweet, head coach Roy Coates said.

Tri-Captain Brittany Moriarty of the women’s track & field team shattered the school 5k record by more than 20 seconds at the ECAC Indoor Championship last Saturday. Running her last race as a Husky, she crossed the finish line with a time of 17:01.13. Her efforts this weekend earned her Huntington News Player of the Week honors.

Throughout my first few years as a college student, although the temptation was omnipresent, I had never traveled southward during Spring Break. Too often, hockey games of great significance tended to coincide with our scheduled vacation, and, unfortunately, this year presented no exception.
