Volleyball: NU secures No. 2 seed in tournament

The women’s volleyball team traveled to Georgia State University (GSU) and the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) last weekend to finish out their regular season. With wins against both teams (3-2 against GSU, 3-1 against UNCW), the Huskies finished with the number two seed in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament. Before Sunday’s game, the Huskies found out Delaware University defeated George Mason University Saturday to win the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

Homecoming is upon us here at Northeastern and there is no better weekend to get a good look at this year’s winter teams. This is the second year that we’ll see a doubleheader of men’s basketball and hockey at Matthews Arena. If you’re a Husky fan, there’s no better way to spend a day than to hit a hoops game in the afternoon, head to Conor Larkin’s for some refreshments, and then get back to the arena to take in a hockey game after the sun sets.

Men’s Hockey: Huskies caught in 1-7-2 rut

The men’s hockey team dropped into ninth place in Hockey East standings last weekend after two road losses to No. 3 Boston College and University of Massachusetts Amherst and falling to 1-7-2 on the year. At Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill Friday, the Huskies looked like they were headed to their third consecutive overtime bout, but a late goal by BC’s captain Tommy Cross broke the 1-1 tie with 0:02.8 left on the clock. BC leads the Hockey East standings at 7-2-0 (9-3-0 overall), but lost to Boston University (HEC 3-3-1, overall 4-4-1) on Sunday in a 5-0 shutout.

Women’s Basketball: Huskies drop first two

The women’s basketball team lost its first two games of the season, to the Temple University Owls 72-58 at Solomon Court Tuesday and the season opener to Eastern Michigan University Thursday (EMU). The Huskies looked strong at the beginning of the game against Temple, taking a 17-11 lead after eight minutes of play.

Fernie Flaman inducted into Massachusetts Hall of Fame

Fernie Flaman is the only Northeastern men’s hockey coach to lead a squad to a Beanpot championship win. It wasn’t once, but to all four titles. After a playing and coaching career in the National Hockey League, Flaman took over the Northeastern program from Jim Bell as head coach for the 1970-71 season. He’d stay in that roll until after the 1988-89 season.

Field hockey: Huskies earn at-large bid for NCAA tournament

The field hockey team finished second in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and are advancing to the NCAA championship tournament after receiving an at-large bid, despite a 5-1 loss to Old Dominion University (ODU) in the conference championship game. This was the Huskies second-ever CAA championship game – the first appearance was during Northeastern’s inaugural season in the CAA, back in 2005. Four players were recognized with All-CAA first and second team honors. Junior forward Crystal Poland and junior goalkeeper Lizzie Priest both made the first team. Senior midfielders Kaela Barker and Pam Aldridge earned spots on the second team.

Head coach Brian Ainscough hoped his men’s soccer squad would play more comfortably in their regular season finale at the College of William & Mary after clinching a playoff berth with a 2-0 victory over Old Dominion University Oct. 29. “We’re not going down there [to William & Mary] having to fight to the end,” Ainscough said Oct. 31. “Hopefully we’ll be loose down there and that’ll give us a chance to play a little bit freer, so hopefully we can get a win.”

Senior leadership is an asset that binds a team together, delivering guidance throughout the ups and downs of a long season. After losing two seniors last year in sharpshooter Chaisson Allen and Vinny Lima, the men’s basketball team lacks a true senior on the floor. But what coach Bill Coen and the Huskies do have is a group of young, experienced players led by junior guards and captains Jon Lee and Joel Smith who are ready to lead the team in the 2011-12 season.

Women’s Soccer: NU falls 1-0 in CAA semifinal

The women’s soccer team was eliminated from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament Friday night when it fell to Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) 1-0, after the Rams put home a corner kick in the second half. Northeastern had less than twenty-four hours to gear up for the semifinal matchup, after facing George Mason University (GMU) hours before. Much of Northeastern’s game against VCU remained a scoreless one. It was not until the Rams’ Meaghan Dullea put a header past freshman Paige Burnett with 48:30 to play that VCU took the lead and kept it, outing the Huskies from the CAA tournament and ending their season with a 1-0 victory.

Column: Road court advantage?

There may be over 350 Northeastern students in attendance at tomorrow’s men’s basketball season opener. If the game was scheduled to be at Matthews Arena, it would hardly be an impressive number. But it’s being held on the road, across town at Boston University’s (BU) Case Gymnasium, and that group figures to be as loud and rowdy as ever. If last year’s opening round of the season was any indication, tomorrow should be a fun night of basketball. When the two teams met on a similar Friday night at Matthews Arena one year ago, the Huskies came away with a tight 66-64 victory. But last year’s event was just the first year of what has quickly become a welcome tradition for fans from both sides -- facing off against a bitter local rival to begin the season.

Volleyball: Huskies go one up, one down

The women’s volleyball team snapped its nine-game winning streak this past weekend, falling to the University of Delaware Blue Hens 3-0 on foreign turf. The Huskies now stand at 9-3 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. The last time the Huskies were defeated was Sept. 30 against the Blue Hens and according to sophomore outsider hitter Janelle Tucker, the Huskies had not beat the team since 2007. Unfortunately for the Huskies, that fact still stands.

Women’s Hockey: Win streak reaches four games

With two shutout wins over the University of Connecticut (UConn) this past weekend, the women’s hockey team is a perfect 3-0-0 in Hockey East play. Senior goaltender Florence Schelling posted her second and third shutout of the season, and has allowed two goals in her last 103 shots faced. Schelling, who was recently named Hockey East Goalie of the Month, turned aside 24 shots en route to a 3-0 blanking of UConn Saturday afternoon.
