Northeastern Athletics: Matthews Arena turns 100

April 22, 2010
The home of the Huskies reached the century mark. Matthews Arena, the world’s oldest multi-purpose athletic facility, turned 100 years old Friday. Matthews currently serves as the primary home of the men’s and women’s hockey teams, as well as the men’s basketball team. The women’s basketball team also occasionally plays there, and many of the athletics staff’s main offices are located there as well. The building, known as Boston Arena for its first 72 years of existence, opened its doors to the public April 16, 1910. Brochures passed out at the opening described the building as “the most complete home of sport in America – the largest, most complete and most elaborate temple erected for the devotees of sport in the world.”

Baseball: BC claims Beanpot

April 22, 2010
“We are what we are and there’s no way of getting round that.” Those frustrated words came from baseball head coach Neil McPhee after last night’s 9-3 loss to Boston College in the championship game of the Beanpot Tournament. “We just have to figure out a way to get ourselves off the canvas right now,” he said.

Senior Spotlight: Hogan big in women’s on-ice success

April 22, 2010
At just 5 feet, 1 inch, Annie Hogan arrived at Northeastern in the fall of 2006 looking like anything but a hockey player. The forward had left a stellar career behind her at Lawrence Academy in Groton, Mass., earning All-League selection in 2005-06 and team MVP in 2005. But making the transition to a Division 1 hockey program left Hogan with some bumps and bruises along the way. “I was just so small,” she recalled. “I didn’t have any muscle. I just got out of high school and was doing the same toe-drags and fancy moves you can get away with. But [in college] you get knocked around a couple times, get your helmet knocked off get, a couple of sticks broken. You learn pretty fast what’s going to work and what isn’t at this level.”

Player of the Week: Teddy Vrountas

April 22, 2010
Sophomore Teddy Vrountas of the men’s track & field team took first place in the 5,000 meter with a time of 15:02.76 at the Solomon Invitational hosted at Northeastern’s Solomon Track in Dedham Saturday. Even the rainy weather couldn’t stop Vrountas from crushing the field with the second closest runner finishing a distant 17 seconds behind him. His efforts earned him Huntington News Player of the Week honors.

Column: What I learned at NU

April 22, 2010
Since 2006, I’ve taken lessons from a variety of sources, within and beyond the classroom walls at Northeastern. May 7, I will become an alumnus of that fine institution. Fortunately, the combination of classical education and practical experience provided by our administration and faculty has prepared me to take advantage of my knowledge, so that I may contribute to a better society.

By: Patrick McHugh, News Staff Five former Husky greats were enshrined into the Northeastern University Hall of Fame Class of 2010 Monday night at Matthews Arena. James Carisella, men’s track & field class of 1973; Mari Creatini, field hockey class of 2007; Jay Heinbuck,...

Baseball: NU tops UMass in Beanpot semifinals

April 15, 2010
The Huskies snapped out of an 11-game losing streak last night with an 8-5 victory over UMass–Amherst in the first round of the Beanpot. “We broke the streak today which was huge, but we struggled,” head coach Neil McPhee said after the victory. “Hopefully things will start going our way.”

Senior spotlight: Neubeck, Tkachuk a dynamic duo on court for Huskies

April 15, 2010
The volleyball team is saying goodbye to two important seniors this year: Co-captains Leah Neubeck and Jessica Tkachuk both have used their four years of eligibility. Neubeck, a libero and defensive specialist, still has one year left at Northeastern. She will be completing her degree in architecture. As of right now, she plans to take time off from competitive sports to focus on her studies. Neubeck said she hopes to follow a career path that involves the design side of architecture, since that is what most intrigues her.

Column: Tradition worth continuing: Husky Pride

April 15, 2010
This is, somewhat unfortunately, the last thing I will ever write for this paper. After four years (please don’t hate me, Fight for Five), three of them serving The News in one capacity or another, Northeastern is finally getting rid of me. So, with one last opportunity to spout off, I suppose I’d like to make a plea to the student body: Keep caring about the Huskies.

Player of the Week: Evan Whetsell

April 15, 2010
Sophomore Evan Whetsell claimed first place in the 800 meter run this past Saturday at the Mason Spring Invitational, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:50.45. Whetsell’s time was fast enough for fourth all-time at Northeastern, as well as a spot at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) championships. His efforts were enough to earn Huntington News Player of the Week honors.

Men’s basketball: Donation could help keep Coen

April 8, 2010
Athletics Director Peter Roby announced via e-mail Tuesday that 1964 NU graduate Hank Datelle of Atlanta, Ga. donated $100,000 to the men’s basketball program. “This extremely generous gift from Hank Datelle will enhance our basketball program and will serve as the foundation of our goal towards sustained excellence in basketball,” Roby said in the e-mail.

Men’s hockey: Newton enjoying NHL life

April 8, 2010
After just one full season at Northeastern, men’s hockey freshman defenseman Jake Newton decided to skip town early, signing a three-year entry-level deal with the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks. This could be a blow to the Huskies defense as Newton had a big impact in his freshman campaign, leading all defensemen in scoring with nine goals and 13 assists.
