The Huskies returned to a packed Matthews crowd to host St. Cloud State, the No. 2 ranked team in the nation. St. Cloud defeated NU’s local rival Boston College 7-0 Thursday night on their home turf.
Northeastern men’s soccer is back in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament for the first time since 2014, thanks to first-year forward/midfielder Tyler Welch.
Both teams came out strong early with a plethora of scoring chances at both ends of the ice. Second-year goalie Aerin Frankel started in net and came up with some big saves in the opening minutes, despite Providence generating a number of rebound opportunities.
Youth football participation plummeted in recent years, with parents often citing head trauma concerns as justification for pulling their children out. The number of high school players dropped by about 25,000 for the 2016-17 season. Enrollment among 6-to-14-year-olds plummeted by more than 800,000 between 2010 and 2015.
The Northeastern men’s cross-country team fought their way to a second-place finish in the Rothenberg Invitational at Brown University on Friday afternoon.
The Huskies could not make it back-to-back wins on Saturday, as they lost 2-1 to the College of Charleston Cougars (4-8-2, 1-4-1 CAA) in South Carolina. Despite an early goal from first-year forward/midfielder Ryan Massoud, the Cougars scored two goals within 30 seconds late in the game to complete the comeback and take all three points.
With Northeastern carrying a 6-2-0 CAA record, Phillips said she believes the players can get their winning streak and confidence back for playoffs. The Huskies are headed to the CAA semifinals, playing winners of the Oct. 26 round next Sunday, Oct. 28 at Parsons Field.
This weekend marked the seventh time in program history that the Huskies have gone to battle against Union and the first time Union has come out on top since 2002, bringing the all time series from 3-2-1 to 3-4-1.
Fourth-year goalie Brittany Bugalski put up another strong performance between the pipes after posting a 39-save gem against Colgate. Her shutout was intact midway through the third period. With about six minutes to go in the game, UNH got on the board after forward Taylor Wenczkowski beat Bugalski with a low shot.
“We were keeping it simple offensively and just focusing on getting shots through. It’s good to see different people on the scoresheet. I still think we need to shoot the puck more, as there are times when we tried to make one too many passes instead of getting the shot off,” Flint said.
When the Yankees come to Fenway, there is a different breed of live baseball. The balance between sport and spectator begins tilted towards the enthused fans and, if the Red Sox start losing, can lurch further towards the bleachers. While the stadium and rivalry are centered purely towards baseball, it’s easy to lose sight of the sport as a spectator.
Almost as abruptly as Boyd’s volleyball career began, it seemed to end. In eighth grade, Boyd had a bout of mono, putting her in the hospital for two months. While her friends participated in end-of-middle-school festivities, half of Boyd’s hair fell out and she lost 40 pounds. Having led an active life, she said it was devastating to spend six months on bedrest.
