“They gave us a fight all night long,” Coen said. “I thought [Gresham’s] shooting and Pusica’s shooting at the end of the game really gave us a separation, along with Bolden Brace, who really played well for us in the second half, both defensively, rebound wise and moving the ball.”
The Northeastern women’s hockey team welcomed their cross-city rivals from Boston University to Matthews Arena Tuesday night for the 81st all-time meeting between the teams. The 3-3 draw was the teams’ first faceoff in 2018; the Huskies took the previous two contests earlier in the season by scores of 3-2 (OT) and 6-3.
The Huskies were aggressive on both sides from the tip, pressuring the Charleston guards on defense and attacking the basket on offense. The Huskies forced six turnovers in the first quarter and converted those fastbreak opportunities into eight of their 13 first-quarter points.
The Northeastern women’s swimming and diving team raced to a decisive 182-118 dual meet win against the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont, Saturday. The meet against Vermont was the first competition for the Huskies since Dec. 2.
“Every team’s a good team in this league, and to get four points and two wins was a big weekend for us,” head coach Jim Madigan said. “The club that we played is a hard-nosed, tough team to play and you have to earn your victory with them.”
Konya, who will begin his tenure as NU’s athletic director Feb. 1, has worked in university athletic departments from Michigan to South Dakota, California and Texas.
Some might see his frequent career movements as a red flag, but Konya is confident that his past experiences are among his biggest strengths.
The Northeastern University women’s hockey team started the new year with a dominant 4-2 win against the University of Connecticut (UConn) Tuesday night at Matthews Arena. It was the first meeting between the teams in nearly a year. Northeastern won the previous eight matchups.
Over winter break, the Northeastern University swimming and diving team traveled to Ireland for a week for their annual training trip. The international aspect of this year’s trip infused energy into the team compared to what would normally be an uneventful winter training trip to Florida.
The Huskies have played well to start its CAA schedule, going 2-2 with wins against Towson University and at University of North Carolina at Wilmington. The team’s only in-conference losses thus far have come against Elon, the 2017 CAA champions, and James Madison, which has a 4-0 conference record.
The university welcomed its new AD Jeff Konya at a press conference Wednesday, which included addresses by Northeastern’s Senior Vice President Philomena Mantella and President Joseph E. Aoun.
The team could have easily overlooked their meet against the University of New Hampshire. With final exams and a busy training schedule, the team was tired and preoccupied.
Overcoming their fatigue and academic distractions, the Huskies stayed focused and were able to obtain a 160.5-139.5 win against UNH.
