The Huskies notched their 12th consecutive home victory against the University of Delaware Thursday and capped off a strong week with a road win at James Madison University (JMU) on Sunday, bringing the Red and Black to a 9-4-1 record on the season.
Despite splitting the weekend with a win over Towson and a loss at the hands of William & Mary, Northeastern had much to celebrate. Fourth-year forwards Kellie Stigas and Jamie Bartucca tallied new career bests and second-year midfielder Megan Barrett notched her first career goal.
Head coach Dave Flint and the Northeastern University (NU) women’s hockey team knew they were in for a test when the talented Concordia University visited Matthews Arena for a preseason match-up on Saturday. The match was heavily contested, ending in a 3-2 final score.
The Northeastern University men’s and women’s cross country teams travelled separately last weekend, with athletes racing in Boston and Charlottesville, Virginia. The women finished in 22nd place while the men finished in 19th.
The highlight of Friday’s Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener against UNCW was outside hitter Amy Underdown’s performance. The second year posted 28 kills in the match — a number that has not been achieved by a Northeastern player since Lauren DeTurk in 2008.
If you watched any football at all this past week you saw protests of some sort in full effect. While Kaepernick remains unsigned, the movement he started by kneeling during the National Anthem throughout the 2016 NFL season has carried over resoundingly.
The team raised money for cancer research at the Rhode Island Open Water Swim put on by the non-profit Swim Across America on Sept. 9. They raised over $11,000 in support of gynecological and breast cancer research at Women and Infants Hospital in Rhode Island,
“The NU field hockey team had never made it to an NCAA tournament before at all,” Murtagh said. “The fact that this group of women believed that they could do it was phenomenal. Once they did, they didn’t stop there. It was kind of like, okay, this is how we expect things to be.”
Disappointed with the outcome of Thursday’s match, head coach Ashley Phillips and the Huskies came into Sunday with a heightened sense of determination.
The Huskies will look to bounce back with two road conference games this week, with matches against Hofstra and Drexel looming. Despite the strong effort from the Huskies in their recent games, they will look for some tangible results.
The Huskies’ win, their 25th over the Catamounts in program history, served as a needed refresher for the team as they headed home after a 4-1 loss against the University of Maine Friday.
Tangentially, this is yet another example of the NHL lacking any regard for its players. The league doesn’t listen to the players on issues like the All-Star Game, it shows little care for player safety and now it has ignored the opinion of virtually every player on the Olympics.
