The Northeastern University (NU) men’s hockey team accomplished in its opening weekend what it failed to do for eight straight games last year: earn its first win. The Huskies surged past No. 20 Colgate University in the season-opener at Matthews Arena on Saturday night.

After routing Simon Fraser University on Sunday afternoon at Matthews Arena, the Northeastern University men’s hockey team looks geared up to start the 2015-16 season. The Huskies tallied 10 goals in the exhibition against the Canadian squad, including a third-period hat trick from freshman forward Jason Cotton. After an extremely impressive performance in their preseason contest, the team now looks ahead to what should be an exciting season.

The first round of the Hockey East playoffs didn’t go as planned for the Northeastern men’s hockey team as it was swept at home by Merrimack College in two overtime games on March 6 and 7. Merrimack won the first game 3-2 in overtime and the second 2-1 in double overtime.

Head Coach Jim Madigan was suspended for the final two games of the regular season, including Saturday’s Senior Night against Boston University (BU). Madigan was not allowed at his usual post atop the Northeastern bench, but rather on the opposite side of the ice in the press box.

The Northeastern men’s hockey team finished the regular season this weekend with back-to-back games against the Boston University (BU) Terriers. NU won the first matchup 6-5 at BU before losing 6-1 at home on Senior Night.

Both the Northeastern University men’s hockey and basketball teams came into the season with high expectations that they didn’t quite live up to in the regular season. The basketball team was picked to win the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in what was supposed to be a year without strong competition for the conference. The hockey team was ranked 16th in the nation before the season and was picked to finish fourth in the Hockey East preseason poll.

The Northeastern men’s hockey team was defeated by Boston University (BU) in overtime of the Beanpot final by a score of 4-3. NU erased a 3-1 deficit in the third period, but it wasn’t enough as BU scored less than one minute into overtime.

Junior forward Kevin Roy helped Northeastern continue its winning ways by scoring four goals and three assists in two games against the University of Connecticut (UConn) this weekend. NU breezed past UConn in back-to-back blowouts, winning 9-0 and 6-1.

The Huskies received frustrating news on Sunday when they learned that Monday night’s Beanpot final against Boston University would be postponed for two weeks due to the season’s third major snowstorm. The Beanpot finals will now take place on Monday, Feb. 23.
