Hockey East race alive for NU men

It has been quite a turnaround. The Northeastern University men’s ice hockey team started off the 2014-2015 season 0-8-1, the worst start in program history. Since a 5-3 loss to the University of New Hampshire (UNH) on Nov. 14, the Huskies have gone 10-3-3 and propelled themselves back into the thick of the Hockey East race.

Hockey advances to Beanpot final

The Northeastern men’s hockey team upset the five-time defending champion Boston College (BC) Eagles in the semifinals of the 2015 Beanpot at the TD Garden by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday night. The Huskies will advance to their third consecutive Beanpot finals where they will face the Boston University (BU) Terriers who came off of a double-overtime win against Harvard University in their Beanpot matchup.

Northeastern’s men’s hockey team pulled off two dramatic wins on home ice against the University of Notre Dame this weekend. The Huskies picked up four points in the standings as they defeated the Fighting Irish 3-2 on Friday, Jan. 23 and 4-2 on Saturday, Jan. 24.

The Northeastern men’s hockey team rallied after a Nov. 21 loss at Merrimack College in North Andover to beat the Warriors at home the following day and upset No. 3 University of Minnesota a week later. The two-game win streak was halted Wednesday with a loss to Providence College.

Maybe this is how they will finally turn things around. With its win over No. 3 University of Minnesota on Saturday, the Northeastern men’s hockey team had its first winning streak of the season. It was short-lived as Providence snapped the streak on Wednesday in the first of two games against the Huskies. The big question that faces Head Coach Jim Madigan and his team is if they can find the means to bounce back from defeat and play the way fans know they are capable of as the team gets into the heart of this season’s tough schedule.

Expectations were high coming into the season for the men’s ice hockey team. One year after shocking the nation by finishing fifth in Hockey East when they were projected to finish last, Northeastern entered this season ranked 16th in the country and picked to finish fourth in Hockey East. But nothing has gone right since then.

The Northeastern men’s hockey team added a pair of losses to its record after a trip to Quinnipiac University this weekend. A 3-2 loss on Friday and a 4-3 loss on Saturday at Quinnipiac’s TD Bank Sports Center were numbers five and six of the Huskies’ 0-6 start to the season.
