(U-WIRE) MANHATTAN, Kan.- For those partial to the Super-Sized fry at McDonald’s, now is the time to stock up. By the end of year, all McDonald’s food chains will no longer offer Super-Sizing on the menu.
According to the Associated Press, this departure takes away the availability of a 7-ounce carton of fries leaving a 6-ounce carton as the largest option.
Some avid McDonald’s regulars in Manhattan, Kan., were not thrilled about the idea.
Jeff Wells, super-size enthusiast and Manhattan resident, said it was a rather “stupid” idea.
“Why should thin people have to suffer?” he said, “It should be your choice of how much you eat. They have the option of small fries just as well.”
Others didn’t see the down-sizing as too much of a problem.
“I don’t usually eat here to begin with, so this really won’t have an impact on me,” said Jim Porter, Army ROTC assistant professor of military science.
The move contributes to McDonald’s “Eat Smart, Be Active” campaign which was launched last year, according to the Associated Press, in attempts to answer to the demand of healthier options at fast-food chains.
The need to trim down the menu in general also has been on top of the to-do list for McDonald’s, resulting in the elimination of Super-Sizing.
However, many Manhattan residents simply view the change as a way to keep up with the times of healthier expectations.
“I think McDonald’s chose to do this because of the demand for diets. I could see them adding some kind of low-carb sandwich next,” said Stacie Lutz, freshman in pre-med and former McDonald’s employee.
However, Justin Oliver, 16, believed that cutting out the Super-Size won’t make people more healthy.
“People are just going to buy more orders of fries if they cut out the Super-Size,” he said.
Nealy Lutz, freshman in pre-law and former McDonald’s employee, said doing away with the Super-Size shouldn’t hinder business too much.
“I don’t see us losing actual business, but I could see the decision to hurt profit,” she said.
Stacie Lutz believes that people, angered by the decision or not, will still eat at McDonald’s, but she did add she sells quite a bit of Super-Sized fries and drinks.
Whether impacted by the recent decision or not, Manhattan McDonald’s-lovers still have the option to chow down on the McDonald’s claim as America’s No. 1 fry.
Jenny Petty, McDonald’s store manager, would not speculate as to when this change will take affect in the Manhattan area.
“I have heard crew people talking about it, but no one has formally notified us yet,” she said.
In the meantime, Wells said that he will continue to eat his Big Mac and Super-Sized fries, but says that staying active is the key if one chooses to have McDonald’s be a regular part of their diet.
