The Northeastern volleyball team rolled past the Hartford Hawks Tuesday night at Solomon Court, securing their first conference win of the season.
They swept three straight sets to earn the win, making them 1-0 in the conference and 10-7 overall.
Seniors Ashley Adamczyk and Karrin Moore, along with freshman Kira Batura, helped the Huskies put away Hartford in three. Moore led the team with 10 digs, while Adamczyk had four aces, 13 digs and no errors. Batura, who has played consistently well this season, had 11 digs and eight kills.
It was an unorthodox win for the Huskies as Coach Ken Nichols changed around his line up a lot, allowing playing time for everyone and getting some rest for his regulars.
“I realized halfway through the first match we were strong and wanted to give everyone some time,” Nichols said.
The Huskies took the first game 30-22. After 11 lead changes it took a 5-1 run by Northeastern to put the game away. In the second game things really clicked and the Dogs went up 24-9 before winning 30-15.
“We played a conservative second half but we executed and stayed on [our] game,” Nichols said.
Game three was started with a 6-6 tie, before the Huskies pounded out 10 straight points on the way to a 30-15 win.
“Everyone stepped up and did a really good job. We cut down on errors and hit .317 as a team, while they hit negative at one point,” said senior Karrin Moore.
Freshman Brittany Eukovich impressed in her appearances with four kills and a .300 hitting percentage on the night. While Eukovich and others shined on the court, regulars Whitney Weinkoop and Whitney Turner got some rest.
“We have two big games this weekend and I want everyone to be fresh and have fresh legs,” Nichols said.
Northeastern faces Albany and Binghamton this weekend in two tough America East games at Solomon Court Friday and Saturday. Hopes are high that the team will continue to play well and to the level they are capable.
“We just need to hold our own and play tough this weekend,” said freshman Bree Peterson.
